Outdoor plant pots

I live in a new build and I'm planning to get my garden landscaped when funds allow. I've got to stop putting plants in the ground pending the landscaping as I'm going to have a job digging up what I've planted already. I'd like to grow some dahlias and other plants in pots and wondered if you could recommend anywhere I can buy pots in bulk to do this. I don't want to spend too much (saving for the proper garden renovation) but I'm desperate for some summer colour. I've planted out a load of bulbs I'm going to have to dig up before work begins so want to avoid having to do that with more plants and tubers! Thank you.

Big pots are expensive, even plastic. If you have massed pots, only the front ones need to look good. For ones at the back you can consider builders buckets, plastic trugs, with holes in the base.

I got some large plastic pots from YouGarden which are in their second year now and were very cheap compared with buying large ceramic pots from a garden centre. One of them was damaged but they sent me a replacement straight away.

They look good vinnie .And with a bit of something trailing will look even better !

Aldi,Lidl and Poundstretcher often have cheap good pots in season .

If you have a B and M garden centre near you they have very reasonable clay pots, but agree, you can do a lot by putting the ugly pots at the back. Also look out for spare bricks and breeze blocks so you can vary the height of pots in a display.

I got some large terracotta pots in Morrison’s last year after seeing a recommendation on Mumsnet, they were far cheaper than I have found anywhere else. Not sure if they are doing them again this year. Also, is there a local Facebook gardening group? People sometimes give things away on ours.

Think outside the box, or pot! Often discarded items such as builders buckets, kitchen bowls, colanders will make plant pots.
Our local builders merchants has black builders buckets at £1. They only need some holes in the bottom for drainage.

People often give away garden pots on freecyle/fb/gumtree etc.
My local b&q had some in their sale recently and I got a few bargains.

GeneLovesJezebel · 21/02/2022 16:27

You can put them in anything, as long as you put holes in the bottom.
Washing up bowls, anything.

I think uniformity creates a better look .Maybe cheap flexitubs with holes in bottom and /or side .

Cheap wicker waste paper baskets, or any other basket really - charity shops are a good source. Line the sides and bottom with black plastic, and make drainage holes through the plastic at the base. If you paint them first with fence preservative they will last several years.

What a genius idea carnations ! Right up my street .

Frlrlrubert · 23/02/2022 09:43

Someone near me sells half barrels on fb marketplace for £20 and they are massive. Just make sure you drill enough holes in the bottom (my dahlias died of water logging last year). Also, don't expect to move them once filled Smile

You can also buy coffee sacks to cover up ugly pots. Or wrap in hessian. Buy chicken manure pellets in a big tub then drill holes and plant in the tub (paint or wrap it to disguise its origins...)

TXMaxx often has a lot of nice fancy pots going cheap, if you have one near. Worth a look to get stand-out

I grew dahlias in plastic pots from home bargains last year which were huge and £1.99 each. They’re not the most attractive but agree with the comments that they can be fine depending on how you arrange them. I had some tucked in corners so I could just look out of the window and admire the dahlias whilst working. I also found that super cheap dahlias from places like Wilkos still did as well as the ones I spent a ton on from Sarah raven.
