Will a hedge grow here?

We back on to council land, and trees on the edge of the council land have been pushing our fence down for some time. Eunice finished the job. Very little grows there as it's too heavily shaded. There are more trees to the right of the panel that has blown down.

Replacing the fence will be very tricky because of the trees. I'm wondering about replacing it with an evergreen hedge. If I remove the rest of my fence, will there be enough light for a good solid hedge to grow there?

The photo looks almost due south. There is a chain-link fence on the other side of the trees.

Holly, laurel will both grow under trees.

Not too keen on holly. I love holly, but don't want to have to deal with the spikey leaves, especially barefoot.

Any particular laurel? I like aukuba, which would give some colour to a quite dull part of the garden. But is it dense enough for privacy without taking up a lot of the garden? Also will it grow high enough? I've never seen aukuba taller than about 4'.

I think leylandi grows in shade.

It’s nice and dense and evergreen.
Can reach impressive heights.
You’d have to trim it regularly, I’m fairly sure if you leave it a while then suddenly cut a load off it doesn’t regenerate and looks awful so needs trimming often.

Not leylandi. I like the existing trees, despite their fence-displacing growth, and I want a hedge no taller than 6' or so. Also I think leylandi leave a bare gap at the base, which wouldn't do as a replacement for a fence.

Great link, thank you!

Aucuba grows higher than 4ft. It’ll certainly go to 6ft.

Trying to figure out how to protect our privacy, while still allowing light for the hedge to grow.

Is there a solution? Would a temporary fence of horticultural fleece work?
