Olive tree

Can I do anything about my olive tree in this storm? Is it worth trying to wrap it? We just got it last summer and I love it.

Is it a big one? Is it in a pot?

DillDanding · 18/02/2022 11:39

I’ll be gutted if anything happens to mine. Partly because it was eye-wateringly expensive.

But it’s in a massive pot (too big to move) and against a wall, so hopefully it’ll be ok.

If yours is in a pot and not too heavy, I’d put it in the greenhouse or inside.

SalsaLove · 18/02/2022 11:46

It’s planted in the ground, against a fence but still taking a beating. It was hugely expensive and roughly 45 years old. A real treat for me last summer.

Personally I wouldnt want to wrap anything around it as if the wrapping gets caught by the wind it's more likely to tear the branches/pull the trunk. I'm sorry I don't have any advice for protecting it but I hope it's ok.

Beebumble2 · 18/02/2022 12:25

I don’t think wrapping it will help. It will make it a ‘mass’ for the wind to batter against. The branches will allow the wind to pass through, although some of the more fragile twigs might snap.
Our survived a horrendous hail storm last summer, when many more solid structures were damaged. It will recover once the growing season starts.

Many thanks for the replies and assurances!

Olive trees are very resilient, it will recover.

Vandals ripped off all the branches and split through the trunk of a large standard olive tree outside a shop near me. It was just a broken stick in a planter. It had been there for at least 20 years, pruned to the same size, so it was pretty old, I guess 35 years+. By the next year it was almost back to its former glory.

I’m so glad it recovered and gave the tree world middle finger to those idiots!

How is it doing?

SalsaLove · 19/02/2022 08:55

Looks okay this morning, thank you. It didn’t lose any branches but they’ve been blown in one direction. A fair few leaves on the ground. I’m shocked how hardy it is, but also grateful!

@SalsaLove Check down at the base and make sure it isn't rocking when you push it. You might need to firm the soil around it.

Thank you I will do that. My husband mulched around it in the autumn but always good to check. The trunk is quite thick, which is good. Here’s a picture of it when it was planted last summer.

Oh that’s a beauty!

PolkaSpace · 19/02/2022 19:19

Oh wow that's stunning

Tumbleweed101 · 22/02/2022 18:12

My neighbours have a lovely young olive tree. The fences all fell around it but somehow missed the tree. Very lucky.

Beebumble2 · 22/02/2022 18:54

That’s a great tree. Mine are tall lollipop style. I’m going to give it a prune in the spring to thicken it up a bit. I hope.
