Bamboo! Running or clumping?

Can any expert gardening folk help me to identify the type of bamboo this is?
It's extensive and in the garden of a property we are looking to purchase.
Thank you!

That doesn't look like the neat, clumping sort to me.

MereDintofPandiculation · 18/02/2022 10:07

Are there any shoots appearing away from the main clump? Have you loosened the soil around it to see if there’s any sign of runners?

JustJam4Tea · 20/02/2022 07:35

I’d get someone in who knows what they are talking about before you buy. It’s hugely expensive and difficult to move if it’s the running sort.

MereDintofPandiculation · 20/02/2022 10:01

It’s a grass. Wouldn’t glyphosate work if it hasn’t been banned yet?

CherryAndAlmond · 20/02/2022 10:08

It looks similar to mine, which is running. But it looks as though someone has cut it down already and it's growing back? Last year I sawed most of it to the ground and covered it with bin liners, pinned down over it, and some wood to weight it down. So far this has worked on my side but it has now popped up in the neighbour's garden so I'm going to go and do the same there. It's a bugger of a job, but not impossible. If you keep cutting it back eventually the roots will weaken and die.

Justanotherobserver · 20/02/2022 17:46

Cut it right back now and, as soon as it starts growing again, spray the fuck out of it. Repeat until dead.

TheUsualShitshow · 20/02/2022 17:56

I don't know what it's called, but I know it took us about two solid months to clear it from our garden. It has grown through the stone wall. It had gone under the stone wall and still sticks up in the road next to the garden. The roots had grown at least one foot down into the soil and digging them all up was torture.

Anyone who plants the stuff should be sent to jail for a long long long time Grin

Thanks for all replies. Sadly it's running bamboo :( going to cost min of 15k to get rid entirely, says a specialist (following an expensive survey sigh...)

Well we had a massive 10 foot high 30 foot wide clump of it. Tree surgeon chopped it down and sort of ground the stumps a bit and then we spent 3 months getting all the roots out using a pick axe, big metal lever thing, and endless hours of grubbing out every last bit of root to a depth of about 3 foot down. Took ages, very therapeutic Grinand now all gone!! Filled about 20 wheelie bins with root. But it can be done... it was a pain but I'm really glad we did it and quite proud of us too!
Good luck with yours OP!

Well that's only if you pay someone to do it. It's a fucking nightmare but if you're physically able you can do it yourself bit by bit. It cost us about £400 to hire big ton bags to put it all in to be removed.

Only caveat is we did it during the first lockdown where we had literally no place else to be. I think if we'd both been working as usual we'd never have found the time...but it's more than possible if you don't have 15 grand to piss away!

@TheUsualShitshow

Ha, we had the same lockdown entertainment!

I agree, £15k sounds ridiculous - it's a big job, but not skilled, and I imagine a professional company would have all sorts of fancy bits of machinery to make it easier.

Me and DH cleared out back garden of it over several (backbreaking) weekends - key tools were a pickaxe and a matock. Bloody hard work, but no way I'd pay some that much to do it for me!

TheUsualShitshow · 01/03/2022 18:34

Agree, pickaxe, gloves, and LOTS of beer in the fridge Grin
