Thinking of putting a pyracantha in. Just replaced a forsythia that had to come out due to building, as the blue tits seemed to love it….

Fairly blank canvas…

Callicarpa
Ivy
Mahonia
They seem to spend a long time on the hollyhock seed heads.
Teasles

When is it safe to do it, Crazzycat?

Sparrows like yellow crocus, the little bastards.

I grow bronze fennel, mostly for show but I do use the seeds, if I can get to them before the blue tits.

I have a colony of crocus eating sparrows who live in my jasmine with a robin and seasonal mate. There used to be a pair of blackbirds nesting there too, but they have moved up the housing ladder I think.

The thing that really brings birds to the garden though is a decent sized bird bath or two.

Pyracantha are perfect for the birds OP so definitely recommend you put one in. They provide shelter and berries, and good for the pollinators too.

How big is your garden? And what type of garden do you like?

We moved to a new house last summer and the garden was a complete blank canvas. Thankfully our next door neighbour has a mature garden was was already getting lots of birds visiting so we didn't have to wait too long for them to come to us.

We've put in a mixture of small trees, some evergreen shrubs and perennials. We get birds visiting our bird feeding station and bird bath now which is lovely as it was really hard leaving our old garden behind and all the wildlife it attracted.

Goldfinches love the forget me nots. They may be taking the seed but I also read online that they decorate their nests with the flowers which is very sweet!

Someone up-thread mentioned Amelanchier - it really does give good value in the garden; it's a decent-sized shrub that can be pruned to keep it compact, has pretty flowers in early Spring, the berries are earlier than most and the birds love them, and the Autumn colour is great.

Ivy was also mentioned - pigeons and blackbird like the berries but don't forget that a thick screen of ivy on a wall or fence is a good habitat for nesting birds. There's a blackbird nest in mine.

We have a large palm tree type plant that has huge white flowers. The blackbirds seem to
love the flowers. I guess it must be the seeds they are after

Ivy is also a late pollen bearing plant, so fantastic for bees in the autumn.
