Hi, looking forward some words of wisdom please... and be been given a fairly small cherry tree which I love. It sure where to plant it though... would the back of a raised flower bed be ok? Do I have to consider the fence or other trees? Does the blossom cover everything when it drops? What about sunshine? Could it go next to a shed?
Where is your cherry tree?
Thank you 😊

Disclaimer! I'm not a gardener so no idea what I'm doing!

Mine is in the front corner of the front garden, next to the pavement. North of the house, so not masses of sunshine all year round. Doesn't get too much blossom yet (only 2.5 years old!) so haven't noticed a big covering. But I won't care when I do! I love blossom. I got cherries from it for the first time last year (morello) and made them into a pie and it was totally delicious!

Do you know variety? Sweet cherries née full sun, ideally, but sour cherries are fine with a bit of shade.

It's small now, but is it a dwarf or patio tree, or will it grow tall? Do you know the rootstock?

We have 2 sour cherry trees, one is self-set, they thrive in a north facing very windy, sunny spot.

Thank you so much for replying! It's a Stella cherry tree that will fruit in 2 years so it's still young. According to the 'label' it can grow up to 3m tall. I don't know anything else about it.

So Stella wants as much sun as it's get for the lovely sweet fruit. It can get quite wide too, as wide as it is tall, sort of.
Maybe have a think about the places you list, and find the one that gets sun for as much of the day as possible.
You'll also want good access to chasemof squirrels and blackbirds pick the fruit.

I love a cherry tree.
Watch it isn't too close to any buildings, paved or tarmac areas, as depending on your ground the roots can be problematic. Remember that the roots can spread wider than the branches. My sister had to get rid of an absolute beauty because the roots spread just under the surface of the ground (clay soil) and pushed up the roadway.

TheSpottedZebra · 12/02/2022 21:31

Oh yes, the roots can sit quite high, and can mess up drives, paving, lawns etc.

You could fan train it against the fence if you need to keep the size contained. Consider that you will need to net it somehow if you want to get any of the fruit yourself. My mum uses cherry sleeves which make her trees look ridiculous but she gets the fruit. I have two small ones in a fruit cage.
