Bluetits have just moved in!

I am SO happy!!!!!!!!!!
I've tried to get them nesting in our flimsy bird boxes for the last 4 years. They always checked out the boxes, but never chose them to nest in. I read somewhere that the wood was probably too thin. (They were boxes that you buy with paints for the kids to decorate).
So this year for Christmas I asked for nice new bluetit boxes. I put them up at the weekend. It all happened today. I've got one little bird in each of the 2 boxes, heads poking our like a tiny dog in a kennel. They've been in and out all day.

Fabulous!

VeronicaBeccabunga · 03/02/2022 15:03

Brilliant!
We've had little birdies having a look at ours, but not moving in yet.

Here's one of them. I hope the pic works!

That's lovely. Thanks for sharing!

KissedintheDark · 03/02/2022 15:44

Ah, that's made my day.
I used to regularly have bluets nesting here but since there are so many
cats in the immediate neighbourhood now the birds stay away.

That’s fabulous. We took all our bird boxes down and cleaned them out with boiling water a couple of weeks ago, put them back up. I need to watch to see if anyone has moved in ! I wasn’t expecting any action til March !

beguilingeyes · 04/02/2022 10:21

Oh my, I've been getting excited because we have blue tits at our bird feeders...I hadn't even thought of boxes rushes off to buy some.

Where do you position them in the garden?

notafraidofthebigbadwolf · 04/02/2022 10:35

Mine are on the side of the garage, about 2 meters up, on a trellis where a rose bush grows. It's a sheltered spot that hardly gets any sun. I chose that spot because there was an old birds nest in the rose bush when we first moved in, so I thought it must be a decent place. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!

Look at these two little faces! I was researching, and yes, it looks like they are a whole month early. Perhaps because January was so warm?

awwwww... thanks! We need updates as Spring progresses

TheOnlyMrsMac · 04/02/2022 14:15

Happiness is...two little faces looking out from someone else's birdboxes! Who knew?! Smile

We love our garden wildlife. Keep up the good work, OP.

Pumpkin314 · 04/02/2022 14:18

How wonderful! We only in have a little garden, have recently put a bird feeding table in but so far only takers are a group of fat pigeons. Not even wood pigeons, just regular old parklife pigeons 😄

peaches99 · 04/02/2022 14:25

Aah, my late DM loved blue tits, one birthday we bought her a box with a camera set up in it (she could view them on her tablet).
She was a very gentle woman, but you should have seen chasing off the squirrels 🐿 that were on their bird feeder with her broom Smile

GingerFigs · 04/02/2022 14:33

Awww that's so cute 🥰 I love bluetits, fabulous buzzy little birds. As someone else said, who knew happiness was seeing wildlife in someone else's garden Smile

Crazzzycat · 04/02/2022 14:40

Blue tits start looking for nesting sites in January, but are unlikely to be nesting at this point. It’s really encouraging they’re having a good look at the boxes though. Fingers crossed they decide to go for them 🤞

@beguilingeyes, bird boxes should be placed so that they face between north and east, unless there is something shading the boxes during the day. Otherwise there’s a risk that the chicks overheat

ErrolTheDragon · 04/02/2022 14:40

Well done, op - great photos!

Our tit box was occupied last year... by a colony of tree bumble bees. Which is also good, just a bit unexpected.

FloBot7 · 04/02/2022 17:31

Aww! I caught two having a nose in our bird box a few days ago. I don't think they've moved in yet but I'm hoping they remember it when the time comes Grin

TheOnlyMrsMac · 04/02/2022 20:30

I love the fact that they do advance viewings to find a suitable home.
