Just wondering if light getting in could be an issue for an old sack.

We use sacks. Chit the seed potato first. Then out in the sack with some compost. Once the shoots emerge from the compost cover them. Repeat.

How successful are they?Does the light get through and don’t they disintegrate let water out easily?

We use Wilkos, seem to work ok. But I’ve had great potatoes from old potato compost used in a planter with bedding plants!

Potatoes are quite thirsty. The compost soaks up the water. No sunlight gets in. I’ve used sacks, plastic sacks (old compost bags) in the ground. My friend uses old tyres. Potatoes are hardy and grow anywhere really.

Should be a , between compost bags and in the ground!

They look really dry. It looks like a variety of errors.

She’s in Seattle. So I don’t know the weather there, but the UK is wet which helps potatoes to grow.

Seattle is famous for rain, I know it quite well as had family living there. That said can’t find any U.K. sack disasters. Heartened you hear you get on well with them. I know somewhere selling them quite cheap so might be worth picking a couple up just to try. Do you need a close weave?

I think we used potato sacks. So might have been slightly different from pure hessian in the photo. I got them from wilkco or Marshall’s where I get seed potatoes from.

Chishnfips · 23/01/2022 18:55

I've used bags for life before. Both hessian and tarp like material. Worked really well and much cheaper than potato grow bags.
