Metal border edging - sharp/safe? Or how about wood?

As above really, I want some edging for curved flower beds. DH suggested the metal but I’ve never seen it in person so can’t imagine how thin/soft it is, does it have a sharp edge?

Thé alternative is probably wood on a roll, I’m guessing the main disadvantage is that it will rot. I’ve discounted brick/stone as DS 3 loves diving to the ground playing ball in that and I’ve worried he’ll bang his head on them.

I have mild steel edging in my garden. It was professionally cut, looks good and easy to mow against. Secured with small steel posts set in cement and welded to edge on inside. I will try to attach a picture.

I have everedge and love it. It helps keep edges really neat, is easy to edge against. You set it so the top is the same level as the grass so there is nothing sticking out and you can mow over it. It’s quite slim but not sharp. I can’t imagine it’s more of a risk than any other firm edging.

I have recycled rubber edging.

It looks like bricks and you can mow over it.

But unlike bricks you can have curves. Or straight lines. Cut it with a saw. Peg in place. Pretty easy.

Is that your own garden @Janeandjohnny? It's fantastic!

OhRosalind · 14/01/2022 07:02

Wow @Janeandjohnny your garden spectacular! The edging looks really good, ours in MUCH smaller though so I’m not sure about using cement, I think DH was looking at the stuff you just hammer in. How long did it take to darken (if it was shiny steel before)?

Do you have a link for the rubber @user1641832968632486258?

Thank you. Its a big garden! The cement was only a little in each hole- maybe 1 or 2 cupfuls to hold the little post in place so we could weld post to steel. I have used everedge before and thought it was a bit light. It took about 8 weeks for edge to rust so it looked nice then.

www.flexiborder.co.uk/

I don't think I bought it from there but that looks similar to what I have. If you search for recycled rubber garden edging there are a few places offering variations.

I have everedge - really pleased with it, been in nearly 3 years now and no problems.

OhRosalind · 18/01/2022 21:36

Ever edge looks great but we’re outside the U.K. and I’m not sure I can find it, it would be something similar, hopefully.

I think I’m going to order a roll and if it isn’t too sharp we’ll use it and just make sure the soil is at the right level. Hopefully it will soon have plants draping over it anyway. It just looks so much more elegant and discreet the wood option. Then rubber as a back up option.

Hopefully you can order from them anyway, or find an alternative.

I did the “wood on a roll” option when I first moved here. It didn’t last long. The wood started to rot after a couple of years, it was a bugger with grass growing between the grooves etc. For my garden, it ended up a waste of time and effort.
