Anyone know about cacti and succulents?

I'm trying to propagate a variety of them using a leaf and repotting it.
They've not died but are taking what seems like a massive length of time for them to sprout roots or do anything really
Any advice ?

Any idea what it is? What shape is the leaf? How long ago did you try?

I would do it by pitting a thick layer of gravel on top of some moist compost then simply lying the “leaf” on top, so you combine moisture with impeccable draing.

@NanTheWiser is the best cactus person on here

Thank you @MereDintofPandiculation!

OP, it would help to know a little more about the succulent you are trying to root by leaf cuttings, and a photo would help.

Mere has given good advice, laying the leaf on a gritty compost kept only just moist should encourage roots to develop. At this time of year it will probably take longer, unless you can provide bottom heat, and you need patience! Some leaf cuttings can take a while before they start putting out roots, so don’t give up hope yet!

I've used gritty compost but maybe I need to up the grit quotient
Not sure what variety they are. I'll post a photo when I'm back home.
Thanks!

@TimeFlying, yes they are! I would guess it’s an Echeveria (possibly E. agavoides, but without seeing the plant, impossible to say). Keep it a little moist, but don’t over water it, and the baby plantlets will slowly grow into a baby plant. When it’s bigger, you should be able to pot it up separately, making sure you use a gritty compost mix.

These plants thrive on benign neglect, but need lots of sun, and watered when completely dry.
