Plants that like damp/wet AND shade

I have a large area that is naturally very damp and mostly shaded. What can you recommend to plant for various heights so there is interest but also ground cover to stop any unwanted weeds (I appreciate I will still need to weed).

Any advice will be welcome as I'm going round in circles via Google.

Ferns love that kind of environment and come in all shapes and sizes. I prefer the evergreen ones. Hellebores are perfect for this time of year. Hosta like the environment but do best in pots or the slugs (which also like damp shade) will eat the lot. There are also some good shade-loving ground covers like pachysandra and wild ginger that will reduce the need for weeding.

Thanks for those tips. I will look them up.

Cornus midwinter fire, pyracantha, Japanese anemone , Lily of the valley, corkscrew rush and carex bronze spring to mind. If you look at Piet Odulf he has many ideas and beautiful schemes,

I would also dig out some of the ground and put in medium sized rocks, decaying wood, etc. to make a bug and wild life garden. There are lots of bog garden plants that make good ground cover.

Hostas
Ferns especially Osmunda regalis, Onoclea sensibilis and Blechnum chilense
Rodgersia - all have lovely big leaves
Gunnera if you’ve got room
Peltiphyllum peltatum (fab autumn colour)
Astilbe
Ivy - variegated forms
Rheum - especially the reddish forms
Iris pseudacorus variegata - variegated form of our native flag iris, colours last better in shade
Luzula nivea
Luzula sylvatica

I have a similar area of my garden and I've ordered three small rogersia palmata (I bought a rogersia aescufolia last year too - big horse chestnut-shaped leaves), to plant with ferns, astilbe, and japanese forest grass

Heuchera - there is an endless variety of these

Coleus - gorgeous, colourful bushy foliage, again with a lot of variety

A cornus needs sun or part shade. Am happy myself with ferns, hosta, berberis, Hydrangea...

Trethew · 15/01/2022 08:45

But sadpaper Coleus will not survive a UK winter

Get yourself a copy of Beth Chatto ‘s The Damp Garden. You will be spoilt for choice!

Ferns, hosta, heuchera, lots and lots of snowdrops. Things with silvery foliage often do better in shade. I grow my hostas in the ground and they’re fine. Also sedum, tge tall ones. I love these and mine grow happily in shade.
