I saw a lovely plant today, but didn't have my phone with me to get a photo.

It was about a metre tall, with flowers that look like crocosmia only a deep purple colour, but had small, pointed leaves.

Couldn't get much from Google, but I'm sure MN will come up trumps! Thanks.

Can you give some more details? How big were the leaves, were they coming off a branch or straight from the ground?

By “like Crocosmia” you mean a lot of flowers about an inch across coming from an arching stem?

Was it outdoors or in a greenhouse?

Namechangeforthis88 · 06/01/2022 14:47

Might it have been an iris? I think crocosmia are a type of iris, but I can't find a trace of a purple crocosmia, but plenty of purple iris.

Are you in the UK?

I would love to be the one that has an answer to something!

Was it a Dierama?

Dierama blackbird added to wishlist. For the gothic zone.

Was it this? Salvia Amistad

You guys! Salvia Amistad wants to go on the wishlist too. I'm going to need a bigger garden! Or maybe Salvia nemorosa ‘Ostfriesland’, as Gardener's World says it's hardier.

'Im not sure Dierama etc are in flower at the moment.'

I didn't know if the poster was UK based. My salvias went over at first frost and I can't think of anything in flower now with deep purple flowers that would be as tall as crocosmia

@Namechangeforthis88

If you are enjoying those colours try Aconitum napellus (more commonly known as wolf's bane or monkshood) - it basically glows purple and is one of my favourites. Poisonous but worth it.

Namechangeforthis88 · 07/01/2022 14:12

Bonus points for your Aconitum napellus suggestion as the internet is telling me it tolerates a bit of shade and is liked by bees. Should be working, itching to update my garden planning spreadsheet.

Why work when you can plan a garden Grin

Sorry only just got back to this! I think it's the salvia - thanks very much.

Will post a photo next week.
