Any opinions would be appreciated. I was taught to stop end of November but some say on the web to cut all year round. My friends is long and being mild we're not sure whether to cut it again .Will it harm the grass if we mow it all year at a high cut Thanks.

I'm looking to cut mine at the end of this week. The earliest/latest cut I ever did was on 6th January.

Curiousmouse · 15/12/2021 16:30

Monthly, if necessary only, after October.

Dreamstate · 15/12/2021 16:42

I qas told not to cut grass when ots wet so im leaving mine now until its warmed up enough to dry it.

Guineaguinea · 16/12/2021 08:56

Depends how it's growing and ahow tidy you want it. Mine got two cuts this year - its a short lawn, not meadow but grows very poorly and I don't mind it a bit ragged.

Hawkinsfirefly99 · 16/12/2021 09:06

If the weather is mild then the grass will still be growing so can be cut. Just make sure you don't cut it too short because if a frost turns up shortly afterwards (being winter it's quite likely), then the grass will suffer.

I don't understand this 'last cut of the year' nonsense. My in-laws spout it every year in October(!). It should be cut when it needs it.

Helpstopthepain · 16/12/2021 09:08

Our gardener did the last cut of the year last week. I’m not sure when he’s back.

Shedmistress · 16/12/2021 09:23

The reason we use grass as grass is because it is hardy.

This last cut nonsense...if it is
A: long and
B: dry

You can cut it if you want.

And if your mower needs a service, simply take it for a service. You don't have to wait until the end of the year.

rslsys · 17/12/2021 11:38

Of course you can cut it when its wet. The only time Golf Courses don't get cut is if they are covered in snow or the frost hasn't thawed.

Shedmistress · 17/12/2021 12:29

As a seasoned gardener and ex head hardener we don't cut it when wet because it tears it rather than cuts it and it leaves claggy lumps of grass behind, it clags up the grass collector and in general is a pain in the arse to clear up the mower afterwards. Especially on large areas. That's why I always wait til it is dry (or at least dryish).

If you are not careful, you can get into a chicken&egg situation: You don't cut the grass because it is wet, so it grows long. Because the grass is long, it stays wet so you can't cut it. Round in a circle.

This thread made me cut the lawn yesterday. It looks so much better now. Thank you!
