Potted plants for a wall in shade

One of my garden projects for next year is to cover part of a wall in those hanging plant pots/buckets with some shade loving plants. The wall is naturally in full shade, and there is also a (clear panelled) canopy covering part of it.

The wall was shoddily painted when I moved and the bricks are chipped, so even a fresh coat of paint hasn’t done much. It’s right next to the back door so I want to improve the view a bit when I’m cooking.

So far I’ve got ivy and possibly ferns and spider plants on my list but I’d love something that flowers, and maybe some nice scented herbs too. I’ve also found a pack of wildflower seeds that says they are suitable for shade, could these work in little pots? Any other ideas?

Thanks

I have found some hardy fushias get on well in shade. Full shade is a little awkward for flowers - I think I had a passion climber on a north facing wall once that did well.

Wood sorrel?

I found that crocosmia and hydrangea do well in shade. I also bring some of the sun-loving plants to shade in summer when it's very hot, so I let them grow very well in the sun in early spring but in summer they make my shady areas more colourful.

I have crocosmia in a shady border, and anemones come to think of it! I will try them in little pots next year and see how they do.

Wood sorrel is a good shout too, just the type of little flowers I’m after

I have a fushia in a sheltered sunny spot, I may try to move it next year to see how well it does in shade.

Thanks all

Try some heuchera. They come in a gorgeous range of colours and are shade tolerant and good in pots.

Here’s my list of shade tolerant flowering plants but not all would be suitable for heavy shade or for pots

You might have to try quite a few and see what works, then plant more of that.

Ivy is a good bet but you’d need a non clinging one or it’ll cover the lot

Hellebores
Astrantia
Snowdrops
Aquilegia
Iris/fairy iris
Campanula
Japanese anemone
Geum
Hardy geraniums / cranesbill geraniums
Violets
Cyclamen
Anemone
Scilla
Astelia
Muscari
Tiarella
Creeping phlox

I find it hard to grow things in little hanging pots - they need a lot of maintenance ,watering etc and I find most plants just want more depth .

I agree you might have an uphill battle with full shade and pots

Do you have soil at the base of the wall? If so then how about a climbing hydrangea- likes shade, lots of flowers, easy to care for.
