Making drainage hole in ceramic pot

Has anyone done this successfully/unsuccessfully before?

I found two beautiful planters on Etsy. But both are without drainage holes. I saw online video teaching to drill holes yourself by chipping away the material at the bottom or using a driller. Are these methods really practical and what's the chance the pot can remain intact during the operation?

Personally, I wouldn't risk it. Could you put a pot with drainage holes inside the planters instead??
If that isn't feasible I would tape up the base of the planter and use an electric drill so you're drilling through the tape and the planter. That way, the drill won't slip and minimises the risk of the while planter cracking.

well it is possible, but the chance of breakage is high. Best bet would be to drill, but don't use masonary setting.

Frankly I think you're best option would be to use the pots as planter holders rather than outdoor planters.

Thank you. I decide to use them as outer pots with inner plastic pots lined within...

I think if you use the drill bit for ceramic tiles then this is possible. I had my 17 year old drill holes in a ceramic pot for me in the Spring. I'm not sure what the particular drill bit is called but it's made for drilling through tiles.

Tile/pot ceramic drilll bits would be masonry drill bits on a normal to slow setting not hammer setting 🔨

Pop some sellotape on the pot where you'd like the hole to prevent the drill bit slipping

We’ve done it with terracotta pots. You soak them in water then just use a normal drill.
