Can you plant over electric cables?

We've recently had some armoured electric cables put in underground (in a protective tube) for a hot tub, however it's had to be positioned running alongside a fence and exactly where I had wanted to plant some privacy hedging and shrubs along this fence for privacy.... will this still be possible? Would the roots be a danger and make this a safety hazard or will the cables be fine protected in its tube?

I'm a very novice gardener, so any advice or recommendations would be much appreciated!

I had electric cable run underground alongside a fence for a greenhouse nearly 30 years ago. IIRC, it was buried about 18-24” deep, and covered with a layer of sand as a marker. Subsequently the border was planted up (not a hedge, though) with various shrubs and plants with no problems.
Do you know how deep your cable is? I think current regulations are 18”, but don’t quote me on that! Plant roots shouldn’t be a problem, but obviously you don’t want to damage the cable when digging holes for them. There should be some sort of marker where the cable is buried.
