Is this flame-leaved tree a Mountain Ash?

Suppose I could just knock on the door and ask - but is this attractive looking tree, turning to flame in autumn i.e. now, a Mountain Ash?

If so, what particular type - or are they all the same? I really struggle with getting flowers or trees because when I Google Image them, they only seem to come as close-ups, it's very hard to get an overview or context for them!

No it’s a Rhus, known as a staghorn Sumac. They are beautiful in Autumn, but send runners up everywhere.
I grow one in a very, very large pot.

I've always wondered what this tree is. There are a few near me and they are stunning in autumn.

If you're looking for a small tree with autumn colour maples (the Acer family) are a good choice.
I had a lovely Sumac years ago but I did get fed up of the runners.

'Send runners up everywhere'? What does this mean?!

Do they look okay the rest of the year? It's odd how some trees and bushes only really give a few weeks and might look rubbish at all other times!

I love Sumac. My ex ILs have a gorgeous one but yes, it has spread (runners means it starts new branches/trunks from the along the ground).

@Beebumble2, how big is your pot?

OP, I love what they look like all year round. They have unusual cone flowers that look like spikes/horns.

It is very large, I can get in it! It’s grey plastic ( sorry) and a traditional round design. I had to order it, made by Stewart I think.

We used to have one of those, spent all the time digging out the runners, very annoying. I was going to suggest maple as well if you want similar colours, in fact, when I saw the thumbnail, my first thought was maple due to the colours but once I brought up the full picture, it clearly wasn't.

Agree it's a sumac. We have one in our shared car park. It is beautiful in the autumn but spreads like buggery. The Council are constantly cutting it back.

Our old neighbour had one out the front, and it was reasonably well behaved. She cut it down to a stump for some reason and within a couple of months, there were about 20 of them popping up within a 10 foot radius of the stump. I absolutely adore them, but I'm very wary of planting one in our new garden.

Mountain ash has loads of clusters of red berries on autumn on quite wispy
branches that bow under their weight.

NanTheWiser · 19/10/2021 14:52

For an equally glorious autumn display, there is the tree, Liquidambar styraciflua, aka Sweet Gum. Much better behaved!

Pootles34 · 19/10/2021 16:02

We have one, it's just got lawn around it which works out fine, as we just mow over any little runners it sends up. They are so beautiful at the moment!
