When I was out walking at the weekend I saw this plant growing on the edge of woodland with the most beautiful berries- they looked very nearly glass-like and in the late evening sun they were almost glowing! It was small tree size and the leaves were starting to turn. Does anyone know what this lovely plant is? TIA!

It's a guelder rose - its a wild sort of viburnum , has lovely pink and yellow and crimson leaves too at this time of year, if its planted in the sun; flowers are gorgeous too. I love it (can you tell?) but be warned - if you want one in your garden, though described as a shrub, it can get awfully big if its pleased with the soil and rainfall...

Thank you so much @candycane222- that's amazing! You're definitely not the only one that loves it- I decided there and then I wanted one in my garden! Thank you so much for the heads up about the size- that's good to know.

We have these as part of a mixed native hedge! They are gorgeous!

A final thing in its favour is that it is a preferred foodstuff of waxwings in inundation years

Oh yes MereDint we actually had a flock of waxwings once - when they'd finished the berries in the hedge, they started on the pile of prunings outside the house waiting for the garden waste collection...about 15 years ago, but unforgettable!

Thank you all so much- I REALLY want one now! Now I’ve just got to work out where I squeeze it in! Grin

And you can make jelly with the berries!
