I have my first greenhouse (finally) Grin

It’s 8x6 and I’m thinking of a potting bench/table on the short end, racking along one long side, and maybe a small seat and pile of pots on the other long side. Not sure I’ve got stuck on one idea though, would anyone like to inspire me please?

@Keiki

Following. Buying a house with a greenhouse and am very excited so be able to use it rather than filling windowsills with pots covered by plastic bags!

My essentials include heat and light ( it has mains electricity) and a radio.
I have a beautiful wooden science lab stool, rescued from a skip at school, a wooden crate labelled ‘TOOLS’ for string, gloves etc, and a large tin for my seed packets.
There is metal staging along one long side. My propagator sits on this and in spring it will be full of seed trays and pots of seedlings.

@Pottedpalm Are your seeds OK with the extremes of heat and cold that you get in a greenhouse? I keep mine in the fridge, at the back of the top shelf where it's too difficult to look for anything.

It sounds as if you have a large propagator. Mine is only single seed tray size, enough for a dozen 2.5in pots.

Ooh, I hadn’t thought about temperatures for the seeds! Everything seems to germinate ok, apart from spring onions, which are temperamental. There wouldn’t be room in the fridge… maybe I should put them in the brick toolshed?

I am ashamed to show pix of the inside of my greenhouse at the moment. But it’s on soil not slabs, has a bed running down one side for tomatoes in summer. In winter this area gets the stuff that doesnt need to be frost proof but appreciates a bit of shelter. The other side has staging; top of staging has a series of propagates/heated mat area. Shelf has a shameful collection of greenhouse related tat. Floor has rolled up bubble wrap that doesnt always get put up. Walking section down the middle has woodchip.

Crucially, the greenhouse has power. So i can use growlights and bottom heat to get stuff started early.

I also have a large shed.

Best Buy - large heat pad. This is in a sandwich: toughened glass on top, then heat pad, then old yoga mat underneath. Gives a large, evenly heated area. Game changer.

Here's mine this week with biennials ready for potting on. A bit messy from planting up but nice to see all the green 😊

I'm going to trial putting in a hot box over the winter to keep the frost out and start next years seeds a bit early. It'll be an interesting experiment.

I'm still using plastic greenhouses but think I have justified glass for a future year

It depends how long you want to keep them for. Things like cabbages, where you only want a few plants, theseed packet can last for years, and fluctuating temperatures are said not to be good for that. But if you are keeping yours for years with little falling off in germination rate, then maybe it’s not as important as they say.

@GoldenBlue
That looks wonderful! Just realised it’s pictures of the inside that are wanted! Moving some pots inside today so will take a new pic.

Has anyone else used fresh manure to heat their greenhouse?

Thanks for the tip @Purplewithred
