Over wintering Canna

I bought a couple last year and left them in pots in the (unheated) green house over winter which they seemed ok with. I even grew 3 from the seed heads.

But now I've been reading that they should be lifted like dahlias. Any MN wisdom?

I love Cannas and have a good few - they are all in large pots and planters which I simply bring in for the winter as they are. Like you, I simply keep them, over winter, in an unheated greenhouse and they always survive without problem. They are far hardier than they are given credit for and can even be left in the ground, if you have planted them out into beds, provided that they are well mulched and your soil does not sit soggy or waterlogged over winter. Like many exotic species it is cold, wet soil which causes rot and failure, rather than freezing temperatures

I'm also new to canna and left ours in the garage last winter. They came on well in the spring and filled three new pots when I split them.

We won't have a garage this winter so I'm looking for alternatives - glad to hear @Beekeeper1 say they're hardier than you might expect as I've been a bit worried about the limited overwinter options.
