Too much water? Too little water? Too much sun? Too little sun?

Confused

I've had the little ones in the square pot for about 18m, and the bigger one in the round pot for about 5-6m. I give them a little water once every week or two. The windowsill is south-facing. When the sun is particularly hot I take them off the windowsill and move them into the shade. Last year I kept the little ones outside for the summer, also moving them into the shade when it was particularly hot. All that happened was two of the original four died.

So when they say "Water sparingly and infrequently", and "Wait until the compost has completely dried out before giving a little water" and "Never let your Aloe sit in water" they don't really mean it. Because I have broken all those rules since this thread, and look at the results!

Wow, impressive improvement! Smile
Mine is about 6 months old and has quadrupled in size since I got it. It's on a shelf near a South facing window so it gets lots of light but little direct sun. I water every week or so. It is growing BUT there are black blotches on the inside of some of the leaves.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong anyone?

@Quinque Aloes can be prone to fungal diseases, showing as black spots (could be Aloe rust). Cold, humid environment could be the reason, especially as the weather has now become a bit chilly. Reducing the amount of water might help, but won’t make the spots disappear, unfortunately.

Thanks Nan, that's helpful, I'll cut down the watering and move it downstairs where it's warmer.

Please help me again!

The aloes had been thriving on my south-facing kitchen windowsill. I give them about 1/3 of a cup of water once a week.

About a month ago, when the weather started getting very sunny and warm, they started looking a bit brown on some leaves. So I moved them to a west-facing window. My kitchen windowsill can get baking hot. I continued watering once a week. But they are looking worse and worse.

Should they have more sun? Less sun? More water? Less water?

Aloes are supposed to be easy!

I brought mine back from the brink. I had repotted them in the wrong sort of soil and placed them in a sunny spot. Disaster! Got some very sandy soil from the garden centre and placed them in more shaded spot inside and they came back strong and had lots of little babies too!

I don't know the answer as I've never had luck with aloes but bumping for you OP as I'm invested in your plants after reading the full thread!

I would change the compost completely. Water it. Pick up the pot to see how heavy it is. Then water each week, just so the pot feels heavier, like the first time after repotting. If the pot is light then it's too dry.
