Does anybody know what type of nest this is?

We’ve just moved and the garden has, no exaggeration, not been touched for about 2 years so tons of work needs doing to make it manageable and safe for our small children

Was cutting the privet hedge this afternoon and came across this behind a layer of leaves. Doesn’t appear to have any current inhabitants but somebody mentioned it could be a bird nest rather than the old wasps nest that I assumed it was

Does anybody have any guesses?

If wasps we will need to get rid but I can’t imagine it would be a bird nest (long tailed tit was mentioned) given it would be easy for a cat to get it

Looks like a wasps nest to me

Thirded. Wasp.

That’s definitely the answer I wanted. Thank you 😊

DH was bombarded by angry wasps whilst trimming the hedge so hopefully it was from last year

I would say it’s a wasp nest. I had three this year and previous years. Wasps tend to bugger off in September but next year they will return not to the same nest but will build a new one in the same facinity.

Wasp
We had a small one on our shed once.
Popped it in a bucket of water and left it for a few days.
Though one that size you may need a specialist.

They'll be dying off soon, so I'd just leave it.

Thegirlhasnamechanged · 16/10/2021 19:04

Fairly confident it’s a vacant nest but autumnscene has me nervous they’ll be back next year now. Everything I’ve read says that wasps will avoid making a nest near an existing one and, if possible, try leave a bit remaining

Leave it in place, people pay good money for fake wasp nests to deter new ones.

Wasps. Not long-tailed tits, their nests are woven and fluffy and mossy and have a different base and shape.
