Your garden In October

What jobs are usually done in October?
What does your garden have going on right now?

I'm planting wallflowers this weekend
And getting some bulbs from Wilko. I have had great results with them over the last 2 years

It's a good month to do a tidy up of your greenhouse if you have one ready to over winter plants.

Time to plant trees and shrubs too. I've just about run out of room for anything else. I'd like a bigger garden but don't want to leave my current garden!

I've done a bit of autumn lawn care. We live in a new build and our grass is just awful. Not helped by the compacted clay soil either. I've reseeded the lot after a bit of scarifying so I'm hoping it'll help. I'm going to order a lawn aerator and give that a go next time otherwise. Doesn't look like there will be any rain this week so I'll be out watering it every day.

I've planted a good number of my bulbs from Farmer Gracy but have some left over. I'm tempted to do a bulb lawn now. I think the Pickwick crocus I've got would be good for that. I've got a few muscari bulbs too and some left over tulips and ranunculus. Could I bung them in too or would they be better saved for a flower bed? I could definitely dig another patch for them but I'm trying not to walk on the lawn for a couple of weeks to allow the new grass to take. I've got a patch of lawn at the side of my house in good nick which I've not touched so it would be a good spot for the bulb lawn. It's a sunny position too. I'm hoping to plant an Olivia Rose Austin bare root rose hedge out there and some Hidcote lavender too. I think people might think it's a thoroughfare and not our garden so I want to put a little hedge in to make it look as garden-y as possible. When's the best time to plant lavender? Was thinking of ordering some 9cm pots from Crocus or somewhere like that.

I've just planted a row of 10 lavender plants at the front of the house, so hoping now is as good a time as any, winteranimal! The soil is incredibly poor in that spot and so hard to dig holes I've no idea how they will do but I've always found that lavender survives pretty well in most soil, so fingers crossed.

Thank you! I had better order some then.

I planted a lavender hedge earlier this year and it brought me so much joy this summer as it's right outside the window where I work. I hope yours turn out well.

I've loved reading this so thought I'd join in. I have a long wall down the side of the driveway with with a shallow bed in front of it. We have a lot of ivy overhanging the wall front the neighbours side and it has the most beautiful berries forming at the moment. The bees, wasps etc have loved the flowers the past few weeks. I've decided to plant bulbs and alchemilla at the base, so have a ordered the Perch Hill tulip collection from Sarah raven, some allium christophii and some jewel toned gladiolus and the alchemilla has been given to me by my MIL who has been dividing hers. So much to do in the garden when I look closely, but when I stand back at the french doors I see the holly berries turning red on the trees, the rosehips in the hedge, the dew bedecked spiders' webs in the trellis and think, actually it's quite beautiful at the moment!

A few typos in there! And should say gladioli

What a lovely scene you have there @StyleDesperation. I think I’d like to dig out a border in my front garden and plant some bulbs there in the coming weeks. I’ve got a good size front lawn but it would be nice to put more colour there. I love hearing all your ideas for inspiration.

Need to cut everything back, clear the greenhouse, clear the veg beds minus the tomato's which are still going strong. Mulch my flowers and maybe this year plant some bulbs to have some colour a little sooner

I've had a couple of days annual leave and have used it to sort out the garden.

Have cleared the raised beds (who knew sweetcorn had such deep roots!!!) and will sow some green manure for over the winter. Have cleared out and cleaned the greenhouse. Emptied the pots of late summer bedding that were finally going over. Then planted lots of bulbs (daffodils, tulips, crocuses and grape hyacinths) and some pots and hanging baskets of pansies for the patio. Bought some root trainers and sowed sweet peas in the greenhouse.
