Best quick growing plants for privacy

Hi there,
Neighbours are building a garden room at the end of their garden. There’s a 5ft fence, which I put in earlier in the year (kicking myself that I didn’t put in a 6ft fence but I replaced the fence that was already there like for like). The garden is not very long and they will be able to see right into my kitchen.
There are no plants along the fence on either side. Any ideas what I can plant that will grow tall quickly to give me some privacy?
Thank you.

Bamboo is fast growing and nice and high

MissJeanBrodiesprime · 21/09/2021 15:38

Yes, I thought about bamboo which would be ideal for height, however I’ve seen in other people’s gardens that it can also spread very quickly!

Can you put trellis along the top of the fence and grow climbers along it? Clematis Montana and evergreen honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica) are both fast growing and would cover a short fence over one summer.

@Pinkywoo Yes trellis might work to give it some height.

Thanks both for your suggestions.

Yes I was going to say trellis too. You can get some nice ones with horizontal slats that look really nice. I prefer it to the criss cross ones

Leycesteria Formosa grows pretty quickly. It grows from the base and can be pruned to the height you want. It’s not evergreen, but the leaves can stay in a mild position.

Elder trees grow quick (and their variations) and can be heavily pruned to stay the height and shape you want.

Don’t plant bamboo! You’ll regret it in a couple of years time unless you put in a large pot.
I agree elder gets tall in the summer but you can really cut it back to control it and the flowers are lovely

A neighbour down the road grows banana plants , not for the bananas obviously, but they grow very tall and would make great cover, and look amazing. The problem is that they die down in winter, but that’s probably when summer house/garden room use would be at a seasonal low.

There are two types of bamboo, clump forming and running. The clump forming ones are generally well behaved, avoid the running ones which can be very invasive and more trouble than they're worth.

In your position I'd raise the fence height with trellis and grow climbers up as suggested. Something like Clematis armandii 'Apple Blossom' has nice flowers and is helpfully evergreen. There are a few winter flowering Clematis too, which is nice at an otherwise quiet time of the year in the garden.

Very similar situation here. We've changed to a 6' fence. Instant relief!

Bamboo on a boundary is a fast way to fall out with your neighbours if it’s a spreader. If they’re putting in a garden room they’re unlikely to be standing at at 5’+ high window looking into your kitchen. It might not be as bad as you’re expecting.

MissJeanBrodiesprime · 24/09/2021 09:38

Thank you everyone for your suggestions! I’ll definitely be avoiding bamboo, although in a pot is a nice idea!
Clematis and trellis is probably the way forward. Or possibly just change the fence to a 6ft.
No I’m not thinking they’ll be standing at their window looking into my garden/house, however their new building is raised a little, as is my house so will make them higher up and I just value my privacy.
Thanks again everyone.

Bamboo in pots is fairly safe! Just water and feed well. and pot on when needed.
