new gardener - south facing border help (Scotland)

Hi all,

I'm fairly new to gardening and coming up to a year in my first home. I've enjoyed learning to look after the borders and plants (the lady I bought the home off was a keen gardener) but now looking to make a few changes. I'd really like to take up the Hebe but not sure what to put in its place? Its south facing and relatively sheltered. Planted in front are Lupins which I love! I was wanting some winter greenery there or colour?

Also I have no idea what this big tree/bush in the corner is (second photo) but it feels its taking over. I think I'd like to remove it too. I know the peonies and iris are ready for cutting back in front of it.

Am I best to dig both out now and then cover the soil over winter ready to replant in spring?

Just to add I am fairly sure the corner shrub is a blue blossom and I've missed the pruning window for it (I do like how the neighbours clematis is climbing over it though).

You’ve got a lovely selection of plants there. Have you considered just pruning the Hebe back, it should regrow. I think the shrub in the corner could be a Ceanothus. This would also improve by pruning, although next years flowers are made on this years growth.
You’ve a lovely Acer to contrast the deep greens.
