Will trailing geraniums overwinter?

I bought loads of tiny ones this summer (thank you B&Q clearance rack!) and they really spread out and flowered beautifully. If I take them up and put in a pot in a sheltered area will they survive the winter and refliwer again next year?

Hmm, I have had various levels of success of overwintering summer bedding. The chrysanthemums did well. The geraniums managed about 50/50. That was in an unheated greenhouse. But I suspect I lost some to being too dry. (Note to self. They need to be watered if they're in the greenhouse!)

This year I've potted up my trailing fuschia to see how they fare in the green house.

I always leave mine in place in the ground. Cut them back and hope for the best. Some of them survive, especially if it's a mild winter

I overwinter geraniums in the conservatory every year. They flower all winter, I cut them back before I put the mouton the spring.

I always leave mine in the ground or in their pots outside. They always survive from year to year, but can get leggy. I have a small sheltered London garden.

I'm in the northwest and never managed to overwinter any outside yet. But I've got scented perlagoniums inside. If I had an outdoors one I liked I'd take some cuttings and have those indoors rather than the whole plant.

Being pedantic - I assume the op means pelargoniums (trying to spell it right this time, I nearly always get it wrong) not a trailing/climbing geranium which are fully hardy.

RampantIvy · 15/09/2021 08:34

It depends where you live. We are on the edge of the Pennines, so the answer is a definite no. I have over wintered them in our conservatory before, but I CBA with the mess and the faff. Also, the temperature can drop below zero in our conservatory. I just compost them and get new ones the following year.

Pokhora · 15/09/2021 21:12

Sorry to hijack this thread but I was wondering if anyone can tell me if this trailing geranium or pelargonium (not sure which) is hardy or not? I was late in planting it and it has only just started flowering.

RampantIvy · 15/09/2021 21:20

That wouldn't survive a winter in my garden @Pokhora.

MossyBottom · 15/09/2021 21:23

@Pokhora that's a pelargonium.
I bring one or two of each colour into the house and over winter on a window sill. I also take cuttings, 4 or 5 in a pot. Water very little. Some will survive and can be potted on in spring.

kinzarose · 15/09/2021 21:27

Thank you for the replies. Yes indeed I am referring to pellies, will give them a go but will be prepared to compost them if necessary.

Thanks both, I might try overwintering too. Will they carry on flowering if I bring them indoors over winter?

junebirthdaygirl · 15/09/2021 22:24

I bring mine into the conservatory for the Winter and they survive. Water..not too often. We don't use the conservatory in Winter so it's cool enough in there. Will try this year to take cuttings..thanks for that tip!!

Classicbrunette · 16/09/2021 05:32

I’ll be bringing my pellies indoors very soon. Where I am the winters are nasty so I’m taking no chances. It’ll be nice to have some cheerfulness inside too.

MossyBottom · 16/09/2021 13:56

They will flower further into autumn indoors and start flowering earlier next year.

chesirecat99 · 20/09/2021 14:33

It depends where you are. I have some on my bedroom balcony in London that are over 10 years old. I just leave them. The only thing I do is shake off any snow on the rare occasions that we get some. I lost a few to the Beast from the East but that is it. You see them year round in window boxes here.

viques · 23/09/2021 10:43

I have trailing pelargoniums in hanging baskets which I leave overwinter before deciding whether to compost or not. Some survive , others don’t, but there is no way of telling which they will do by looking. I have tried putting them under shelter but find that leaving them to their own devices works better. Probably wouldn’t work in places which get weather but I am in London.

chesirecat99 · 23/09/2021 13:21

That's a trailing ivy leaf pelargonium, @Pokhora. It looks like it's Supreme White, the same as my poor neglected pelargoniums that have been going strong for year upon year (in London) Grin
