Tall-ish, evergreen, flowering plant that'll live in a pot in half-sun

I'm after a tall-ish (top height about 1-1.5m) evergreen plant that flowers and will happily live in a planter/pot (15cm tall planter). It's to cover a bit of wall which, at this time of year, gets sun 6am-1pm. A winter flowering plant would be amazing!

I had thought about Viburnum tinus but it's very hegd-y and dense whereas I'm after something that'll kind of dapple the wall.

I love Japanese anemones for their height, colour and structure (i.e. not too dense) but they're not evergreen.

I'd though about hebes but they don't grow very tall I don't think.

Any ideas, lovely gardening people?

Is it going to have to be hydrangeas? No worries if it is, I love a good hydrangea!

Fatsia japonica? Mine is turning into a bit of a beast. Not in a pot, though.

Camellia would be perfect for this.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 12/09/2021 15:28

It might need a bigger pot though.

I thought camelia were quite compact?

Fatsia japonica: I think my neighbour has this - looks lovely and a total beast Grin

What do you mean by compact? They can grow quite tall, and will definitely flower in winter.

Not “flowering” as such but fatsia as mentioned or one of the New Zealand flaxes, which come in different colours. Or choysia which is flowering.

NoviceGardenLady · 12/09/2021 15:34

Sorry, I meant 'compact' as in not very tall and kinda tucked in at the sides (like won't spread too far).

I have a choysia in my backyard - the flowers are lovely but only lasted about three days

Off to Google NZ flaxes Grin

Sarcocca (aka Sweet box) might fit the bill - flowers are quite inconspicuous, but have a lovely fragrance in the depth of winter and it is evergreen.

You can try a myrtle.

MrsBertBibby · 12/09/2021 17:06

Are you able to get a bigger planter? A small planter will limit the size of the plant, I'd think.

londonmummy1966 · 12/09/2021 17:10

Definately a camelia mine are about 10ft tall. There are some really lovely varieties around although nothing quite beats the wax perfect look of a white one.

amprev · 12/09/2021 17:11

Pieris should fit the bill.

SherbertMellons · 12/09/2021 17:14

Bay Leaf either as a tree or bush. White tiny flowers.

Justbetweenus · 12/09/2021 17:17

Jasmine? (Trachelospermum jasminoides is evergreen, would dapple a wall, smells divine …)

15 cm is only 6 inches - that doesn't sound nearly big enough for a tallish plant. Especially an evergreen, it's liable to be top heavy and blow over in winter.
