Advice on house plants please!

I’d like to get some plants which are particularly good at improving air quality, but don’t need lots of light (they’ll be in a NW facing room and not on the window sill). Any recommendations? Preferably fairly or very small so I can have several on top of a chest of drawers

Will they be near any source of heat - fireplace, table lamp, radiator?

There's a good reason why Peace Lilies are so popular. Don't mind the shade, hard to kill, great for air quality...

Philodendron Scandens also do great (ime). I grow mine in a small North office at the opposite side of the room to the window and it does very well indeed.

Both of those can get big - though both are very easy to control size.

I have a string of hearts in a similar position and that does well too - though does appreciate some time in the window during very dark days. That hangs down but grows in a small pot - and can be trimmed very easily if it hangs too low. But not especially known for air quality improvement.

Thanks, I’d forgotten about peace lilies. Philodendron Scandens has lovely shaped leaves but looks like it could take over a bit!

It takes from cuttings very easily so it's entirely possible to take yearly
cuttings and pot them up in a small pot to keep. Give the main plant away. That way what you have is always fresh and small.

Mine's a couple of years old now and still relatively well behaved.

I recommend Aglaonema. It's happy in shade. Perfect for gloomy rooms like our bathroom!
