September in the garden

I thought a monthly thread with jobs to do and photos of what's doing well, etc might be nice.

On the 9th of September it's traditionally time to cut back lavender.

I'm starting on some bulb shopping. I have a small area I could naturalise some daffodils etc.
My top tip is that Wilkos have good quality bulbs at good prices.

My compost bin has all the worlds wood lice in it. Can't see any worms now. I think that's a sign it's ready.

Jerica I’m going to be replacing my summer hanging baskets with autumn/winter ones, with heathers, crocus, ivy, ophiopogan, cyclamen. I’ll also plant up window boxes for spring with mini daffs and mascari, and hide them somewhere til they start coming up. I will also do Christmas window boxes with tapestry of foliage, baubles, berries, a lot of it will be plastic so that it lasts. And swap the box’s around depending on the time of year.

Is it a bad idea to put pansies in my veggies e bed once my tomatoes and sweetpeas have been taken out?

NigellaSeed · 21/09/2021 15:30

As temporary colour once it's too cold to grow any veg? It's in my front garden so I'd prefer to still use it over winter than cover it over

@Autumnscene thank you, your plans sound wonderful!

I have ordered some wallflower plants.

I haven't had wallflowers for years. I'm quite excited.

Years ago an elderly man in my village would sell plants wrapped in newspaper for just pennies. I assume he has passed away as this hasn't happened for ages. But I love it when people sell things directly from their gardens.

If you plant wallflowers now they will have a chance to establish while the soil is warm and then they are pretty frost proof.

Where have you ordered your wallflowers from? Years ago, you seemed to be able to get them from everywhere - bare rooted and wrapped in newspaper. I've been on the look out and haven't seen any this year

GlitterBiscuits · 29/09/2021 10:24

@hoveringhobbit
The wallflowers are coming from Sarah Raven. Not cheap but if I wait until I find something better value I'll never sort it

If your lawn isn't too wet it's a good idea to do a bit of maintenance to it.
You can still scarify or give it a thorough rake.
I'm going to stab mine with a fork to aerate it a bit.
Then I've got some lawn sand and also autumn lawn food.

Lovely colour on my dwarf aster.
I know these as Michaelmas Daises.

These are the jumbo wallflower seedlings I got from SarahRaven

Supremely packed, which is probably where most of the money goes!

Lawn maintenance is a good idea - ours doesn't look very good at all so that's a good tip. I'm considering a wildflower patch but can't decide whether to sow now or in the Spring.

It is my first winter with a greenhouse. What is everyone growing in theirs at the moment?
