Plant ID - help with this monster

Can you help me ID this monster? It's in the gardens of a local attraction and i think I can find a corner for one or two - no more as they are 6-7ft high. I've tried to find the gardener at the attraction to interrogate him but he's never around, and google hasn't helped me.
Many thanks.

Is it a phormium (also called New Zealand flax)?

toughdaay · 02/09/2021 14:55

Do you have any other photos. It's really hard to guess from that picture.

I think it is

You may be right Grouchy! I'll have to be careful where I try it if it's leaves are poisonous to animals. I was envisaging it in my 'giants of flora' bed with gunnera, enseme and other monsters, might have to rethink.
I apologise for the quality of the photo - I was in something of a hurry as a seed pod or two had fallen quite accidentally into my rucksack and I was keen to make my getaway.

Yes, definitely a Phormium. They can grow ENORMOUS, we had two of the variegated ‘Sundowner’ removed because they simply grew too large. Which is good, if that’s what you want!

I have an area of about 500sqm down the end which I'm turning into a kind of giant specimen walk through. One side is shady, the other sunny so it might work there. It's gated so the dog only comes through when we go through.
It's where the pampas grass is hidden from passers by 😉

It's a monster all right! Ours had to come out, and it took forever to kill it off.

OP, I have a huge one in the back garden of our new house.

It’s hideous but incredibly healthy - you’d be welcome to have it if you lived near and could dig it up yourself!

Catname · 04/09/2021 11:31

If you ever have to remove it, it is ridiculously difficult to dig out. I took several weekends of hacking back before using a spade and fork to peel the outer layers off. It was a favourite haunt of my toads though 🐸

Having said that, I’d planted it in the wrong place and I’m considering them again for my latest garden. If you have 500m2, I think you might fit one in 😊
