Approach with your borders?

Hi all just wondered as the title says how you approach your borders and planting schemes. I have a large border which runs in a sort of semi circle then a straight border leading upto the front door.

Part of the border is reasonably full with flowering until September. The other part (a large part) is gappy with nothing in between the roses. At first once I had pulled out the annuals in August I thought this was a problem and I would have to put it right next year. Now I have bought stacks of spring bulbs to plant and then I thought it's good that there's plenty of space, also more space for annuals I suppose.

The other problem I have is that buying perennials in pots from garden centres can get expensive so considering growing some of my own from seed.

Tia

You could try buying smaller perennials from supermarkets etc, they are usually much cheaper and don't take long to establish and fill out.

Hi that's a good tip thank you I will have a look in the supermarkets.

My mum has lovely borders which have grown much taller than when I took this photo.

She has the following tall flowers:

Obedient plant
Yarrow
Leucanthemum
Crocosmia
Anemones pink and white
Phlox

They seem to live alongside the rose bushes well.

She’s pulled out a few plants for me so hopefully I’ll get some growing in my garden too!

Oh and some white valerian.

In my border I have repeats with the following…

Salvia variants
Cat mint
Lavender
Roses
Geums
Sedum

Then I also plant in spring bulbs. Cosmos, gladioli,
Verbena which come on later on and the cosmos I pick up from little roadside gardeners to plug in gaps.

Thank you! I do have some crocosmia, seems to grow well round here and I will look at getting some anenomes as I believe these flower later on in the season. White valerian I will definitely look at too.

Yes I need plants to go with my roses, that's the idea. Did try to grow some cosmos but unfortunately it didn't work but I will have another go next year. Thank you all.
