Lawn edging advice

Hi - really looking for some advice on lawn edging (not the most exciting subject, I know!).

We are going to recut and shape our flower borders. The dges will be curved and we're looking for some low, almost invisible edging to prevent the lawn creeping back into the border.

Has anyone used anything like that they could recommend?

I'm no expert (no lawn!) but I've seen gardens with metal strips as lawn edges, bent to fit a curve. So a very simple edge that doesn't have much profile above the lawn itself. If that sounds remotely appealing worth googling.

I could tell you what not to get! We got some of the plastic edging and it's not strong enough, because people will walk on the edge of the lawn however hard you try to avoid it..

I think it might be one of those expensive "do it once and do it right" things.

Thanks both - it's been narrowed down to metal vs plastic (everedge vs smartedge) and I think you've persuaded me to go for the the metal option.

Even though genuinely no one will walk on the edging except the dogs

I’ve used everedge and am really happy with it

I’ve also used their tree rings to create planting areas in the gravel in my front garden.

I have used block paving bricks. The idea being next year when I have time I can make some curves and indents from the current border into my garden. Just have to dig and move the bricks

Metal edging - I thought this couldn't be bent or was I being told this because it was a round flowerbed so a bit ambitious in that case?

Should the top of the metal edging be at least a few centimetres or more below the lawn itself, otherwise you mow it and - eek!- the blades grind against the top. I had this done on my front border and still can't get the hang of it, it's like I'm mowing alongside the metal strip, I think it's too high up. The gardener could only do so much because she found the metal strip wouldn't go quite deep enough so I had to level up the lawn a bit with dirt and grass seed, I think I didn't go high enough!

Ever edge!! It’s brilliant

Another vote for ever edge. It looks fantastic, creates a really sharp defined edge that's easy to keep tidy. Relatively easy to put in as long as you are prepared to faff around a bit to make sure it's all at the right level so you can mow right over it.

For everedge, if you follow the instructions, the top of the metal needs to be level with where the soil stops and the grass is coming through. I used a large rubber mallet to bang it down. It takes a fair bit of effort edging the lawn, but it’s worth it.
