I’ve got a north facing full shade wall to cover that will be looked at every day from the kitchen.

Climbing hydrangea looks the best bet. But for some reason I’ve never been that keen on them, think I need persuaded.

It’s about 5 metres high in a sheltered mild courtyard. There’ll be pots of host as, ferns etc round.

Variegated ivy is an option if you really don’t like the climbing hydrangias, OP. It supports a lot of insect life and provides nesting habitat for birds if you let it get thick enough.

I’ve got a New Dawn climbing Rose doing very well in a similar position.

In the summer you can plant trailing nasturtiums for extra colour

Climbing hydrangea here

Grows quickly, easy to look after and has lovely white flowers in summer.

Oops, just re-read your OP Blush.

Some of the honeysuckles do well in shade.

Imicola · 21/08/2021 19:28

We have a honeysuckle on our north facing wall, with the added bonus that it smells amazing!

I agree with the nasturtiums idea. My mum has climbing hydrangea which was pathetic for about 5 years but is now stunning and smells gorgeous. She has always grown nasturtiums up it.

I’d go for the climbing hydrangea with honeysuckle and a scented rose through it. Not many roses like the shade but some do, just make you choose the right sort. Worth looking at David Austin Roses, fabulous quality.

Climbing hydrogen is slow to establish, does nothing for a couple of years then, boom, it goes for it. Best to get the largest one you can (pot size).

Here: www.davidaustinroses.co.uk/collections/ideal-for-climbers-for-north-facing-walls I’d be very tempted by the Claire Austin rose if I had a wall like that to plant. Whitley looks so good in the shade.

I have the lovely Madame Alfred Carriere on a N facing wall. Monty Don recommends them. Tempted to add in a honeysuckle if other posters have had luck with them in the same position.

My favourite are trachelospermum jasminoides. You can train them/prune them into a block and grow a suitable rose in-between depending how much space you have

@user1467486752. How does the trachelospermum do in shade? I’ve got one in a pot but I thought it would like at least some sun?

Love the rose idea.
