Can anyone identify this succulent please? My friend had a massive one in her garden and broke a few bits off for me to pot on but I'd like to know what it is!
Thank you x

Well, it is a member of the Mesembryanthemumaceae family for sure, and looks very like Carpobrotus edulis aka the Hottentot fig. This is found growing wild on Cornish cliffs and the Channel Islands, it’s not native, and I believe there have been attempts to eradicate it, as it can choke out native plants.
Does your friend live in the South west? Without seeing the whole plant and flowers, I can’t be definite, but that would be my guess.

Thanks very much. It is from a costal area but the South East rather than the South West. It's much bigger than the Hottentot fig I think.
I've taken another photo with a 2p piece for scale. Does that help?

I still think it has to be Carpobrotus, and it probably does quite well on the South east coast. It does grow quite large especially if cultivated, and can have yellow or magenta flowers.

Thanks very much.
It was a huge plant which looked very happy right next to the beach.
I'm sure you're right!

HOttentot fig is quite big and chunky, a whole step larger than the Mesembryanthemums you see in the garden centre.
