What is this single stem multi pink flowered plant?

As I said, it's a single stem plant with multiple buds and pink flowers at the top.

In another pot I have this small plant. The leaves are very soft.

Both plants came with some free pots I got last summer so have just let things grow to see what comes up. I've had masses of Mexican Fleabane which I am chuffed about and some violets.

The pink flower looks like a phlox, OP. Does it have a nice faint scent?

EBearhug · 12/08/2021 09:39

I'd say phlox, too.

I have a phlox with exactly that flower.

Definitely Phlox paniculata. I think it's the Purple Eye Flame variety.

Phlox

It does! Similar to lilac I think. Thank you all, I'll look them up now.

Any ideas on the other one?

The other one looks like a tree sapling, possibly hazel. Do you have squirrels in your garden by any chance?

longtompot · 12/08/2021 20:05

@Pinkywoo it was in the pot when I picked the pots up, so would have been there, but it does look a bit like a tree sapling now you mention it. The leaves feel soft like new beech leaves.

The other is not hazel, even at that age the leaves are much broader. It looks like an elm - do you see the way the leaf base looks asymmetrical? - sure giveaway for elm

I'd not thought of that. Could it be this one? If so, I could plant it in my native hedge in my front garden.

Sorry, I'm not up in id of individual elms. Ulmus is as far as I get. Could well be wych elm - they wee generally unaffected by Dutch Elm Disease, so we kept our wych elms when we lost all our other elm trees.

I'll repot it and see how it goes. Be nice if it is one. I could touch the leaves all day. Remind me of lambs ears plant in softness though not as fluffy.
