Laying stepping stones in lawn

We have some left over porcelain pavers and I am wondering how easy it would be to use them to lay some stepping stones in our lawn. I was wondering if it is a job I can do myself. Can I just lay them on sharp sand or do they need a concrete base? Our soil is heavy clay if that makes any difference.

I was going to follow this www.gardenersworld.com/how-to/diy/how-to-lay-stepping-stones/

We recently returned a part of our garden and had stepping stones laid down. This was done professionally. They did exactly what the above posted link says.
They took great care to make sure the stones were positioned accurately /straight line/ even gaps etc. Also checked the levels carefully to make sure the stones remained under the lawnmower level. It's been a few weeks now and the stones seem quietly firmly set. They only used sharp sand, no concrete.

It may depend how thick the pavers are, if they are quite think they may crack when walked on if just laid on sharp sand.

'Thin' not 'think'

I laid a garden path myself using the same process as in that article. Id make sure it was level to avoid cracking

Great thanks everyone. They are 20mm thick so I doubt they would crack. My main concern was that with the soil being heavy clay they might sink as it does get quite waterlogged. Thanks for the link, that makes it look very straightforward.

The grass will gradually grow over the edges of the pavers, so invest in an edging iron or edging shears and trim every time you mow. Bit of a faff.
