Best place to buy large quantities spring bulbs

I'm looking for large quantities of spring bulbs to fill along a fence line, under a hedge and to naturalise in a lawn.

I'm thinking a few crocus and snowdrops to dot through the law, then daffodils, narcissi and tulips to line along the hedge and fence.

May be a few small things for a long the foot path edge of border....

I love spring bulbs!

So, where to buy lots of good healthy bulbs that will naturalise and any other ideas for bulbs to plant?

(I'm thinking big heads of allium for the backs of the borders)

Bloms Bulbs...excellent quality and scope for ordering different quantities; also very helpful if you want advice.

I have had great success with bulbsfrom farmer gracy. Even things that didn't come up one year suddenly sprang to big healthy plants the following year.

If you want to buy a lot, Parker's wholesale www.jparkers.co.uk/bulbs-tubers

Someone recommended Clare Bulbs on here not that long ago. The website isn't fancy but the prices are great www.clare-bulbs.co.uk/roman%20cart%20price-list.htm

look out for aldi/lidle middle shelf bulb sales.
usually end of august/early september.

If you want large quantities of each type of bulb then Boston Bulbs sell to the public. I bought mine from there when planting a large grass bank with bulbs.

I find peter nysen very inexpensive for bulbs and with a great range of varieties too. As pp mentioned Lidl are great - fab quality and some interesting varieties and good value. Obvs am sure you know that you’ll do better with snowdrops bought in the green rather than as bulbs.

For naturalising you want to make sure you plant the bulbs deep enough and some tulips are much more reliably perennial than others. The sarah raven website is quite good for identifying the perennial ones.

Avon Bulbs:

Great healthy plants from everything I’ve ordered from them and they are super helpful on the phone too.

J Parker’s wholesale is dutchbulbs.com

Thanks everyone - some lovely new sites to peruse!

I have a feeling I will buy masses of bulbs and start to regret it mid-way through the planting process ( but hopefully rejoice in the spring)

Just a thought, don’t plant them all along the boundary line, save a good few to put into pots that you can put outside your front/back door, sitting room window, patio etc. Then on cold winter February days you can enjoy the bulbs without having to put your wellies and winter coat on.

Look up lasagne planting to get a long season out of each pot, and make sure you protect the pots from marauding squirrels looking for a cheap breakfast.

IamwhoIsayIam · 09/08/2021 10:29

@viques good tips! I have an old very deep belfast sink on a stand that I plan to lasagne plant, and will do some pots near the back door with some scented narcissi.

We only bought the house last march but I monitored the garden through Jan - Feb and there were no bulbs coming up.

I think I'm excited about new bulbs because they offer good return for effort until I can get to grips with a fairly big border.

I try to buy my bulbs from U.K. growers - Taylors and Walkers are old family companies based in Lincolnshire and their bulbs are excellent quality.

Anything I can’t get from them I buy from Bloms. They usually have good value bulk bags.

Personally I’d avoid the cheapo suppliers like J Parkers, as I’ve found their quality to be very variable.
