Confused re border plan

I am continuing with my gradual plan to have a garden to be proud of but being an absolute beginner it is certainly a steep learning curve.

I really like the border plan in the (hopefully) attached picture so am using that as a starting point. However, I can't make my mind up over which is the side that goes against a fence as there seems to be tall plants at the front and the back? I am leaning towards the row with no.11 in is the front as there are bulbs in that row, but I am not convinced enough to start planting!

I would welcome any opinions thank you 😀

Confused re border plan

I think it is a plan for a border that you can walk round, so more of a bed than a border if you see what I mean. I think a border for a fence or wall would be a lot longer , and a six foot wide border would take up a lot of space in most gardens.

On another thread recently someone mentioned a company called “border on a roll” which provides the design and also sources the plants for you. Worth a look.

The smaller plants at the top of the plan are under planting so I’d say that’s the back of the bed. There are a couple of Yucca but they’re quite architectural statement pieces.

I bought some garden planning software that generates plans for you. I’m using it to map out my garden but it’s easy to use and cost about £35 if I remember correctly. Weatherstaff Planting Planner.

Thanks all, who knew there was a difference between a bed and a border Blush

@Catname I will have a look at that software thanks!

The geranium rozannes will be at the front .

Bulbs - and to some extent aquilegias- near the back work because they flower early and then other stuff growing up in front hides the leaves/seed heads.

This could work in front of a fence. Have you definitely got the space for this OP? Would you follow it exactly? I'd love the chance to plant a new border from scratch like this, I think it's so much harder when you have to work around what's already there and decide what to keep etc.

This part of my garden runs down the right side of a straight path that extends 3/4 of the garden. The main garden is to the left of the path. I was just thinking that as it is only 2m wide to the path, by the time I put a border in I will only be left with a small amount of grass so may as well just plant the whole area.

However, I have downloaded the Weatherstaff planting planner and am currently playing around with that - adding the plants that I have already bought and seeing which plants they suggest to complement them. It is great fun - thanks so much for the recommendation @Catname!

I'm glad you're finding it useful. I've not used it to generate many plans as I've got my plants already but it will help as a beginner. The support has been excellent too.
