Which DA rose for an arch?

Help please!

I’ve just put up an arch. It leads to my veg part of the garden. It’s just over 2m high and 1m wide, so not huge. I think a “standard arch” by DA website categories!

Anyway I want a climber to grow up it and would love a rose.

I was thinking Mortimer sackler or the lady of the lake? I think my heart says lady of the lake but my head says Mortimer..(Mortimer seems more manageable and thornless would be great as we’ll go through the arch a lot)

Any advice? I’ve no experience of growing roses!!

I’d love a fragrant rose that is good for bees. Worried a rose will swamp the arch though (and arch would become hard to walk through!) and cast too much shade (is near a lavender hedge)

What do you think? Mortimer? Lady of the lake? Something else?!

Thank you!

This is a dangerous thread for me, I've already preordered 6 boscobell shrubs and two generous Gardner climbers. I keep going back to the website!

Allthenumbers · 18/07/2021 18:32

@lunar1 ha ha!

I think I’m edging towards Claire Austin now.

I do really like the look of the lady of the lake but feel nervous that it is a rambling rose.

I would love the generous gardener actually but according to DA website it’s suitable for a large arch (I think
Mine is more a standard arch)

I’m going to listen to a PP and go with my gut and get the lady of the lake. Will try and hold off for a bare root though in the autumn.

Might just get one and see how that goes. Maybe plant a complementary rose on the other side…

You DO need loads of roses OP! Gardening is such a helpless addiction 🤣

Lady of the Lake will look wonderful.

If you get any shrubs, my favourites are The Ancient Mariner and a newly acquired Roald Dahl.

I don't know whereabouts you are but there's a great nursery near Pickering that specialises in roses. I bought a couple of very old french roses from them a couple of years ago. The scent is out of this world!

Allthenumbers · 20/07/2021 15:30

Thanks! But nowhere near Pickering sadly.

I feel really excited about the lady of the Lake - I’m assuming that it needs to be trained and pruned in the same way as a climber even though it’s a rambler. Seems to be a climber in all but name anyway!

I’m going to hold off till a better planting time which is hard!

We are lucky enough to live half an hour away from DA and went on Sunday. I have 2 Generous Gardeners going over an arch, beautiful smell. I also have a Mortimer sackler going over a shed which has grown loads this year. GG smells stronger than MS.

Also, there's a reason Gertrude Jekyll is one of the most popular roses, the smell is divine,

Thanks @sparklystarshinebright your arch looks great but I think a lot bigger than mine. I think I’d have gone GG if bigger arch cos it’s so popular and has everything I want but I’m sure its too big got my arch

I wish I lived close to DA! I’d love to actually visit and see the roses.

@Allthenumbers, they will only grow as big as you let them! I will cut mine back if it get too big!

Allthenumbers · 22/07/2021 12:30

Ah ok, I did wonder about that. But then I thought they tried to grow up before out? So that if you restrict height they might flower less?

I think though that I may get a GG go cover a fence in my garden so that might be my answer!

@NotMaryWhitehouse

Can I put in a recommendation for The Generous Gardener? It's a repeat flower and the smell is wonderful.

A friend bought Paul's Himalayan Musk from DA and that too looks to be a fantastic climber, although smaller flowers more in the rambling style.

I shall find a pick of my TGG for you......

I was going to say the Generous Gardener. I have it over an average arch. It's beautiful and easy to look after.
Allthenumbers · 22/07/2021 12:55

@DidgeDoolittle that’s interesting! Do you know your arch dimensions? I’m put off GG but only cos the DA website says it’s only suitable for a large arch.

I would say it's about a metre and a bit wide. About 6 foot high. Ish

Allthenumbers · 22/07/2021 14:19

@DidgeDoolittle that sounds similar to mine. Oh god, what to get!! Do you have a photo? Please!!

I put in a 3rd GG last year against horrid neighbouring fence, if you think your arch is too small?

Crappestbag · 22/07/2021 20:07

@NotMaryWhitehouse that’s what I’m thinking - I do have a fence that could be covered by the gg or 2!

AvengingGerbil · 22/07/2021 20:14

Whatever you do, don’t get Paul’s Himalayan Musk. It’s gorgeous and smells good, but it’s a complete thug.

Is it?! Oh god I'd better warn my friend! 😂

Do it!! What is a fence, but an outdoor wall waiting to have 'pictures' on it!

I've just bought a new arch and two Bathsheba climbers thanks to this thread!

They arrived with so many buds and a couple open, the roses are so delicate looking and have a lovely unusual smell. I need shares in DA!

lunar1 · 01/08/2021 11:21

This is my new climber!

Allthenumbers · 01/08/2021 14:30

Congratulations @lunar1

I was going to wait till bare root availability but I think I can’t now I’ve seen yours!!

I don’t suppose anyone has a DA discount code? I had one hiatus expired yesterday 🤦‍♀️

@Allthenumbers the arch was a birthday gift, I was on the website planning for bare root as well but I caved. The arch is going up tomorrow.

Did you decide what you want in the end? I still have an order coming in October 😬

Allthenumbers · 01/08/2021 16:10

I know! I wish I’d caved with 10% off in July 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

I think Lady of the Lake - I want fragrant, bee friendly and a pinky colour and it’s the one suitable for a standard arch. It’s that or generous gardener but I don’t want to defy the DA website which says it’s suitable for a large arch. I’m probably way over thinking it but I’m new to gardening (and roses!) so tend to try do it all by the book!
