Ivy/climbing plant advice

We moved at a new house last month and this ivy (I think it's ivy) belongs to next door. It's growing so quickly it's taking over the garden!

I'm not remotely green fingered and don't really know much about plants. When we first moved my thought was to trim it in the autumn as I don't want to damage my new neighbours plant but it's growing at an alarming rate. Can anyone advise on the best way to maintain it?

I don’t think it’s ivy, can you take a closer photo of the leaves?

TowandaForever · 17/07/2021 16:33

If the picture is of the plants in your garden then I would use hedge trimmers and cut it right back.

I think it's the dreaded Virginia Creeper.
It's a rampant bastard. If it is, hack it right back.

ChateauMargaux · 17/07/2021 16:43

Hack it!! Maybe chat to your neighbours and tell them.your plans but be brutal!

I don't think it's ivy either - I just don't know what it is. I think we will just hack it back. I didn't want to risk killing it but I swear you can see it growing by the day - I put the wee fence up four weeks ago and the plant wasn't touching it!

I put your photo in the Picture This app and it says it's a bukhara fleece flower. Don't know if it's right but I love the app!

Mmmmdanone · 17/07/2021 17:08

Apparently it tolerates pruning.

Onebabyandamadcat · 17/07/2021 17:26

Thank you so much! I'll be using that app to identify my many unknown plants in this garden. Glad to know I can prune away

I think it is Russian vine, which needs cutting back hard several times a year

Beebumble2 · 18/07/2021 12:12

Yes Russian vine, pretty indestructible. Cut back as hard as you like!
