What would you do with this ugly corner?

Just moved in last autumn and have been getting a handle on the garden, which had been unloved for a long time I think. What would you do with this awful corner? We rent so removing the path isnt really an option. It's the sunniest side, so is completely wasted currently.
I'm considering rounding the corner of grass off and making a deep bed? Any ideas welcome, I'm not especially creative even though I love the garden!

How long do you plan to be there? Just wondering how much you should invest in plants - maybe annuals if you’re there for a short time. But what a gorgeous space! I’d love a brick wall!

gardeninggirl68 · 15/07/2021 14:50

no way is that ugly!!

Stickytreacle · 15/07/2021 15:25

That wall is crying out to be covered with beautiful climbing rose or wisteria.

EenyMeenyMinyNo · 15/07/2021 15:37

Hoping to be here longterm all being well. Good shout about the wall, have never had one before so clueless about the possibilities!

If you’re there long term that’s great. I’ve learnt from experience that it’s better to plant en mass rather than lots of single plant types. With that space I’d go for a climber (clematis, rose), salvia cardonna (plant in groups of 3/5, hydrangea Annabelle, penstemons, some annuals (cosmos, nigella etc), philadelphus etc. If you want evergreen interest maybe ceanothus, pittosporum, ilex crenata balls etc.

It depends on your style but it’s a great space to work with

I think that's quite charming!

YY to a lovely climber on that wall

GiantKitten · 15/07/2021 15:51

Are you allowed hens…?

KeyErro · 15/07/2021 15:51

Climbing plant on the wall, fixed hammock?

EenyMeenyMinyNo · 15/07/2021 15:56

I would LOVE hens, but my dog being half collie would spend her whole life herding them 😂

The wall is crying out for a climber you could put up two and have one that gives winter interest.
You could also theme the area , so shrubs that product one colour only so perhaps blues or whites.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 15/07/2021 16:03

If it's the sunniest side, surely a little seating area with a parasol or canopy would be ideal - the brick wall would provide shelter from the wind for sitting outside with drinks and nibbles 🥂

stodgystollen · 15/07/2021 16:03

How far north are you? If it's south facing, you could grow peaches, apricots or figs up the wall in a fan. A small tree isn't very expensive.

senua · 15/07/2021 16:09

Not ugly at all.
Can you cut back the greenery at the sides to reveal more wall.
Totally agree about climbers up the wall.
Are you considering it in isolation; how does it fit with the rest of the garden? Would you sit/stand somewhere else to view this area or would you sit in this area to view some other focal point.
I have heard it said that you should do your favouritist thing in the sunniest spot. The definition of 'favouritist' is totally down to personal preference - flower border, entertaining area, water feature, reading nook... It's up to you!

updownroundandround · 15/07/2021 16:09

Have you got permission from the owner to dig up that much of the grass ? (They may want it to remain for ease of maintenance)

I'd also be more inclined towards using it as a seating area. I'd probably plant some Jasmine and fill pots with other aromatic plants like lavender etc, to keep close to the sitting area too.

ineedaholidayandwine · 15/07/2021 16:14

A deck with a corner arbour on it?

NetballHoop · 15/07/2021 16:23

If the wall gets plenty of sun I'd plant a grape vine and train it across the wall. Then you can put a chaise longue under it and languorously pick grapes while sipping gin.

EenyMeenyMinyNo · 15/07/2021 19:42

In Somerset so pretty mild.
I will of course ask permission, but they genuinely dont seem bothered about the garden as already let me remove 2 huge horrible shrubs and grass seed it, so in fact they have gained grass! When we moved in there was nothing, just compacted moss covered borders covered with bindweed and brambles, a manky Currant Bush and 1 spiky shrub.
Definitely wouldn't use another seating area as I cant cope with the sun, so use the shady patio. 14 yr old daughter of course prefers a dark bedroom & husband suffers so badly with hay-fever he needs an inhaler after 10 mins outside!
I love the climber on the wall idea.
My style if I have such a thing is cottagey, the whole stretch at the back is under the massive trees, (approx 15 metres across) so it's going to be wild flowers, bluebells, lily of the valley underplanted I think (it's also the hedgehogs safe runway!)
This is my favourite bit on the opposite side, but it's chaotic and abstract with plants that people very kindly offered me to fill a dead, empty border!
