Climbing rose ideas- also, trellis or wire?

Hello,

I have finally filled the final bed in my garden, mainly with green waste, then manure and some topsoil. I would like to grow a rose up the wall which is quite large (garage) and it is south facing with no shade so does get very hot on a sunny day. I was initially thinking of having two roses so I could get varieties that flower at different times and it would cover the area quicker- but the actual bed width isn’t that large so I wondered if the roots would be a bit crowded and compete? I’d love to have two but the main objective is to have something thrive so what would you advise?

Is trellis the best idea for support on the wall? I have seen pictures where people have put wires horizontally across an area and trained the roses that way- is it just a preference?

Pink roses are my favourite, does anyone have any recommendations for a fast growing, easy care pink climbing rose? 😂

Thank you so much for any advice, this forum has step by step advised me through the makeover and people have been so patient and kind

On a wall I’d put trellis, don’t forget to put spacers behind it so that there’s space between the wall and trellis.
On a fence I put substantial horizontal wires and fixings. You can also do this on walls, but I prefer the look of trellis.

Meant to say, I’ve just planted a New Dawn climber against a wall. It’s scented and repeat flowering. It’s already left the trellis and frowning above the door. Which is what I wanted it to do.

Growing* not frowning, I hope!

For growth, this is a David Austin’s Gertrude Jekyll, I planted a year ago, in a pot.

You've got enough space there to have two climbing roses, as long as they aren't too vigorous, one in the left corner and one on the right.

Have you looked on any of the rose sellers' websites? Peter Beales (classic roses) and David Austin websites both have useful filters where you can specify eventual size, flower colour, scent or not, time of flowering, etc. That way you can whittle down the number of roses you could have to a more manageable choice. The Gertrude Jekyll that soundsgreektome has pictured is a small climber, attaining less than 2m, with beautiful strongly perfumed pink flowers so would fit in nicely with your criteria?

You could also put in another climber for contrast in the middle, like Clematis or honeysuckle, you can get a lovely mix of flower types and scent and a long season of flowers if you choose early, mid and late bloomers.

New dawn or generous gardener. Both repeat flowering and generous gardener has a beautiful smell.

Forgot to say, trellis does look more attractive, but vine eyes and wires are much more practical in the long term. It needs less maintenance in itself than trellis will, and it will all be hidden by leaves most of the time anyway. If you need to raise the height to accommodate plant growth, it's easy enough to add another wire; changing the trellis is less so. It's also a lot cheaper, especially if you need a lot of support. It's irritating to put up a pretty trellis and the plant/s outgrow it in one or two seasons!

@soundsgreektome sorry, could I just ask how you care for those Marguerites over winter, in pots? I have v similar, but not sure how to care for it once summer is over.
Sorry for hijack!

soundsgreektome · 12/07/2021 14:57

@haba these are my first attempt in pots. I don’t know what to do with them! When I’ve planted them in the ground they’ve died off. Sorry! No idea!!

I was coming on to say Gertrude Jekyll
too - planted mine as a bare root in March and it’s flowering its head off already. I’d better get a move on with the trellis as it will need it soon.

As a pp said the David Austin website is excellent for choosing the right rose.

Thank you so much for all the replies! I’m going to go with the wire, that’s really helpful- I hadn’t thought about having to keep adding in bits of trellis, and it’s a large area to cover. The David Austin website is great and makes it much easier, rather than faffing around a garden centre looking for suitable ones. I’m going to go for the generous gardener (thanks for the recommendation) and one other, I’m thinking probably a white one. I am tempted by yellow though, would that look odd? 😂

There are so many gorgeous yellow ones, I don't think it will look odd, it will look lovely Envy

@soundsgreektome no worries- maybe we'll have a thread in autumn to ask the experts how to look after them over winter? Smile
This is the first time I've managed to transplant one without killing it, and it's even reflowered, so I'm quite hopeful!
