Today I have been sent my first bulb catalogue. I am just not ready to think about 2022 spring bulbs, I am still waiting for summer 2021 to erupt!

But I am a sucker for a bright red tulip and they know it, and I always have room for a few more auriculas, and I have to close my eyes to get past the narcissus pages ........

Stupid question, but if I plant bulbs in pots but inside the house(e.g. in the hall)...will they come out early? If I want them at the normal time do I need to leave the planters outside?

viques · 08/07/2021 17:32

If you want early bulbs why not treat yourself to indoor narcissi, indoor hyacinths or amaryllis. Much better than trying to force outdoor bulbs to flower early. I expect you can do it somehow, after all the flower companies at Chelsea manage to have amazing daffodils in May, though that would be encouraging them to grow later rather than earlier.

Spring bulbs are one of the deep pleasures of gardening, like strawberries - I think they are all the better for being grown and enjoyed in season.

Respect to Rooby, if I ordered so early I would forget and probably end up ordering the same things again. Grin oops!

Oh no, I don't actually want them early, they're for outside, but I may have to store some planters inside due to space.

A catalogue dropped through our letterbox the other day and I can’t believe how excited I was! Especially as I have no room for anything 😬

I usually order in May, taking advantage of the Chelsea Flower Show discounts. But that didn’t happen this year so I haven’t ordered anything, which makes me feel a bit jumpy, like an addict denied.

Most spring bulbs require a period of cold to trigger growth so you will need to put the planters outside (or in a garage/shed) for the winter or force the bulbs by keeping them in a fridge until they start to grow.

Thank you chesirecat that's exactly what I needed to know! Smile

I put a massive bulb pre-order in May…..Farmer Gracy has an early bird discount. And in my defence I’m new to my garden and there was just a handful of rubbish daffs that came up this year and acres of fecking bluebell hybrids choking out the beds so I’m determined next year will be much more colourful, I have lots of purple and orange tulips ordered, alliums, ranunculus, fritillaria and muscari, and a few prettier narcissi as well. Some of the tulip varieties are already sold out as well so glad I did order early. As well as spreading the cost too. I’m planning a big fruit tree order in autumn as well.

Capricornandproud · 13/07/2021 13:03

Ok silly question… I want to pot some bulbs to appear next spring. Could I order them now, whack them in terracotta pots and leave them in sheltered spots with water, sun, etc until next Feb?

LemonViolet · 13/07/2021 15:35

The pre-order I have in with Farmer Gracy won’t arrive until September anyway, so I think that’ll be the same for other pre-orders too?
