Jasmine...

My Jasmine is 'ok' but how do I get it to really go crazy with growth? I have it in part shade/sun and it is directly in the ground.
Is there a particular feed it should have?

Oh be careful what you wish for! What type of jasmine do you have? My new garden was absolutely overrun with jasminum beesianum, and it is an absolute thug, it took over about 15m of wall both sides, and has taken a massive amount to dig out, we can’t get it all as some is around a pond. It only flowers for 5 mins and didn’t have much scent. Rubbish jasmine!

On a more useful/less whingy note, I use Vitax clematis feed for all climbers - passiflora, honeysuckle, I reckon it’d be good for jasmine too.

I've got star jasmine, Trachelospermum jasminoides. It smells lovely.

Just cut it right back. Did that at Easter. It has exploded!

I wouldn’t cut Trachelospermum right back if I were you. It’s not
jasmine.

I don't think star jasmine do go mad in this country. They are slow steady growers here, so probably just sit back and be patient. I had to cut mine back quite hard a couple of years ago and it is fine but has not bounced back iyswim. It's just pootling slowly on as normal.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 07/07/2021 18:51

Blimey, tell that to next door’s lunatic bully star jasmine @BewareTheBeardedDragon. It’s a never ending battle to keep on top of.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 07/07/2021 18:53

I guess it depends on the position then. Mine is in part shade which might make a difference.

Yes I cut my Star Jasmine back after flowering had ended last autumn, and it is still at grass level. I followed the instructions and have it in part shade, part sun, sheltered by the shed awning. It ain't going nowhere.

It must be a slow grower. But I equally have little luck with my honeysuckle plant. Part of gardening is frustrating I have decided.

I think it sounds like you've cut it back really too hard @TeaAddict235. It might take a long time to recover from this. I'd give it a really good feed if you haven't already and hope for the best.

Trachelospermum generally don't need much more than thinning out and taking out diseased/dead or awkwardly placed growth, or trimming to control growth in a tight space.
