Blueberries, super easy and you get loads!

longtompot · 04/07/2021 13:50

Raspberry canes would be my fruit of choice.
Or a gooseberry bush.

Hellocatshome · 04/07/2021 13:54

Raspberries

MereDintofPandiculation · 04/07/2021 14:58

Tay berry. One raspberry cane won’t go far

Babdoc · 04/07/2021 15:05

I’d second the Tayberry. Most soft fruits are readily and cheaply available from “pick your own” growers, so hardly worth bothering with if you are short of space in your garden. Tayberries are a bit more niche, and less available commercially, but large and delicious, and easy to grow. They were developed 5 miles down the road from me, at the crop research institute in the Carse of Gowrie, so can handle Scottish winters.

TheSpottedZebra · 04/07/2021 15:57

Being practical - what kind of space do you have? Is it going in a pot or the ground? What is your soil, how sunny etc...

ArabellaPilkington · 04/07/2021 16:04

Blackcurrant every time. Raspberries and strawberries are great but PYO and shop bought taste great too this time of year.

Blackcurrants are hard to buy and DS and DH utterly adore blackcurrant pie. Here's one I made today! [wins mum award]

They are also super good for you. And native!

This. And they’re £££ in the shop. Though I’ve now planted a second bush because my 3yo and her mates can strip it in five minutes.

MrsFin · 04/07/2021 16:08

I have a blueberry bush and a red currant bush. Both in pots and both produce loads of fruit (although neither did last year for the first time ever).

TheSpottedZebra · 04/07/2021 16:23

Arabella that looks delicious. And I grow loads of blackcurrants.

What is the recipe - just shortcrust and blackcurrants? Cornflour? Sugar?

edgeware · 04/07/2021 16:31

I am not experienced as a gardener but my blueberry bush looks great and produces really well.

JennysMiddleFinger · 04/07/2021 17:13

Blueberry. Although it took me ages to come to that answer, who knew that was a hard decision.

popcornpopping · 04/07/2021 17:23

gooseberry. .because I love them, you cannot buy in shops and off one bush this year I had over 12 lbs of fruit. .also I never do anything to it!

purplesequins · 04/07/2021 17:25

yes to black currants. they smell so nice, the wood as well.

or goose berries. sooo expensive in shops and much nicer fresh from a bush.

ArabellaPilkington · 04/07/2021 18:17

Yes sweet shortcrust (flour, egg, butter, a couple of tbsp sugar ) and mix the blackcurrants w sugar and cornflour. Hot oven for 25 mins sprinkle top w more sugar

Yum. I'm going to make it Grin My issue is that I am so greedy that I always put in lots of fruit. Then a bit more for luck. Then it turns into a bowl of (admittedly delicious) slop. I must learn some restraint.
IndanthroneBlue · 05/07/2021 18:43

Japanese Wineberry: it's a beautiful plant with furry red stems that catch the light all year round, the berries are so delicious and you can't buy them, and you can train it upwards so it doesn't take up too much space, I've had one in a large container for a couple of years and I love it. I would also recommend blackcurrant 'big ben' as you get enough gigantic blackcurrants on one bush to last for ages, I freeze them and a handful make apple pies taste amazing all through Autumn and winter. They also make a wonderful syrup/cordial.

Verbena87 · 05/07/2021 18:45

Blueberry - ours is really productive and will tolerate neglect/cluelessness from me.

VenusClapTrap · 06/07/2021 11:10

Red gooseberries

RubyGoat · 06/07/2021 11:19

I have a quince bush already.
So based on the comments on this thread about productivity, I'd get blueberry.

Waitwhat23 · 06/07/2021 11:20

Redcurrant, white currant or blackcurrant as they can be difficult to get in shops. I make redcurrant jelly to go in as an ingredient in onion marmalade and it really does make a difference from shop bought.

RubyGoat · 06/07/2021 11:21

I wouldn't give up the quince though.

Waitwhat23 · 06/07/2021 11:21

We've also put in a sloe berry bush but it's taking ages to grow!

Gatekeeper · 06/07/2021 11:23

Blackcurrants for definite. They get made into cordials, jellies/jams, pies, summer pudding, ice cream, sorbet, and crumble top tray bakes

Ifailed · 06/07/2021 11:26

I can understand a blackthorn hedge, but a single bush? If it's for sloe gin you'll have a long wait for enough fruit from one bush/tree.
