What is this do you think?

We've just moved house and this pot was left in the garden with a half dead plant in it. I'm just wondering if anyone can identify what it is for me so I can work out the best way to save it, or indeed if it's worth saving. The top part is dead I think, and the leaves are covered in orange spots, so it's not the healthiest specimen, but then it's a 'free' plant and I always like that!

Pear tree?

The PlantNet app thinks it’s a Pear tree…?

A pear tree? That would be worth saving then. It is quite small, but it is quite woody ( the dead part).

Thank you for the speedy replies!

It looks like it's suffering from rust which is serious and can affect other pear trees as well as juniper. In that case I would burn it rather than try to save it to avoid infecting other trees.

You can pick up a healthy one for about £30, maybe even less. I know aldi sometimes have young ones in for about £10-15. They like to be in much bigger pots as well.

Thank you again everyone. I think I might have to admit defeat on this one and get rid, if it can damage other trees.

Personally as that one is so small, I'd start again. However I was probably a bit doom and gloom. Growing domestically, a slightly reduced yield of pears on an otherwise healthy tree wouldn't be a big problem. But if you can give a new tree a good start, it may be less susceptible/less affected

If the growth is all from low down, then it is probably coming from the rootstock rather than the nice pear variety grafted onto it. As others say, it is diseased anyway and will infect nearby junipers and other pear trees, so just get rid of it.

Pear trees aren't worth the hassle if you ask me.

Again, thanks so much all of you. I know where to come now for all my questions. Have I finally found the part of Mumsnet where arguments don't break out?

Agree about the shoots growing from the rootstock, the tree itself is dead.

Useful pot though, give it a good clean and scrub before you put anything else in there though.

You can get some really nice apple trees which grow in pots. The flavour of your own apples is amazing.
