Can anyone help me identify this plant? Found it hidden in my garden and want to know if I can move it to a more prominent location.

Can anyone ID this shrub?

Should have said it’s the red one I’m talking about!

Azalea?

fallfallfall · 17/06/2021 21:46

Ornamental quince

Librariesmakeshhhhappen · 17/06/2021 21:48

Download a plant ID app. They're really handy!

jaffacakes16 · 17/06/2021 21:54

@fallfallfall I think you’ve got it thank you!! The plant ID apps weren’t picking it up but it looks just like that quince.

Do you know anything about it? I found it hidden under a tree but really want to move it so it can be seen.

The petals on your flowers seem to be fused at the bottom into a tube. that would rule out quince, whose petals are free right down to the base. I think maslinpan is closer with Azalea (Rhododendron).

LilyRed · 17/06/2021 22:15

Azalea definitely

MustardRose · 17/06/2021 22:39

The red one is an azalea.

fallfallfall · 17/06/2021 22:45

my azalea tend to have more of a cluster flower head. but indeed upon closer inspection it does look like an azalea.
which prefers shade and acidic soils, probably why it was happily hidden.
it only flowers for a short period and the shrubs do have about a 20 year life expectancy.
i love the color options.

Plinkplonk1234 · 17/06/2021 22:58

Perhaps Weigelia Red Prince. Has it a soft easily bruised leaf or a more leathery serrated leaf? Azalea are ever green where as Weigelia are not.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 17/06/2021 22:59

I think its a Weigelia too.

Bluebird2021 · 17/06/2021 23:00

Are azalea and rhododendron the same then?

HasaDigaEebowai · 17/06/2021 23:00

I have that azalea. It’s definitely an azalea.

RampantIvy · 17/06/2021 23:10

Another vote for azalea

Dunnesstores · 17/06/2021 23:17

I though alstroemeria but it's hard to see from the pic.

fallfallfall · 18/06/2021 00:30

No azalea and rhododendron are not the same, often planted together though. Like similar lighting and soil. Rhodo’s are bigger, thicker leaves much more substantial.

LoveFall · 18/06/2021 00:50

Definitely azalea.

MereDintofPandiculation · 18/06/2021 11:24

Are azalea and rhododendron the same then? Rhododendron is a genus of plants containing over 1000 different species (and of course, lots of garden hybrids). Within that genus, rhododendrons which are naturally small growing are often referred to and sold as azaleas.

So all azaleas are Rhododendrons, not all Rhododendrons are azaleas.

jaffacakes16 · 18/06/2021 20:26

Sorry just catching up on this, now I’m more confused! I always thought azalea were cluster flowers but maybe I’m wrong! I was convinced it was the quince when I googled it.

@Plinkplonk1234 I’m away at the min but I’m going to get back to you on those questions when I can inspect. Thank you all for your input!

Quince make a very dense thorny shrub whereas Weigelia have quite an open habit and put on plenty upright growth at this time of the year.

Iknowtheanswer · 19/06/2021 23:17

I have just spotted this plant this morning! Lived in the same house for 11 years, and never seen it before.

I was looking at it wondering how on earth it had just appeared from underneath a fern which I've had for ages, and DH came outside and said he had no idea that ferns had red flowers.

it's literally appeared overnight. I thought azalea on first glance, but it does look like a Weigelia - it is in a bed with several Weigelias, but they are various pinks and much much taller.
