Can anyone recommend indoor plant for room with no windows

We are currently decorating and I think a plant would look good in our downstairs WC. It has no natural light, so looking for something tall - 50 - 80 cm probably, or shorter if I get a stand, and not too much width as it for a corner by the sink. Quite like something green to lift the room, doesn't need flowers. Maybe something fern like. Can anyone recommend anything as dont know what would survive without natural light. Or maybe recommend good artificial ones.

I don’t think any plant would survive without natural light, I’m afraid. You are better off with something artificial. I don’t have any recommendations, but plenty of places sell them.

Spider plants are pretty tough!
Here's a good selection - I want something for our windowless bathroom so am also looking!

Could you get two the same - put one in a light room, one in the loo, and rotate on a weekly basis?

Mushrooms?? Grin

I have a spider plant and it wasn't really fond of our dark hall. It only did well when i moved it somewhere lighter.

A cactus might work well. If not you can get some really good artificial plants.

I have a Zamioculcas zamiifolia** in a dark corner of my sitting room. The florist I bought it from advised that someone had placed one in a cupboard for 2 years and it had continued to grow! I've not managed to kill mine yet...

NanTheWiser · 17/06/2021 12:38

“A cactus might work well.” Absolutely NOT! Cacti are mainly desert dwellers and need full sun, so definitely not for anywhere without light.

I have a pretend orchid in my windowless downstairs loo. It seems fine. I dust it occasionally.

FictionalCharacter · 17/06/2021 12:43

No green plant can survive without light. A little bit of artificial light just when people use the loo is not enough. Photosynthesis!

I'm sure most people leave the door open when it's not in use, the room isn't going to be pitch black all the time!
LemonLemonLemon · 17/06/2021 12:58

You can get some lovely looking false ones, I’d go with that

Leave the door of your downstairs crapper open all the time?

I think not.

Artificial is the way to go, OP.

ramonaquimby · 17/06/2021 13:28

I have a dark loo downstairs. I rotate 2 plants like rbe78 suggested above! on a regular basis, so far so good.
they are the same plant

PlanDeRaccordement · 17/06/2021 13:29

A mushroom.

Topbird29 · 17/06/2021 13:39

Thanks all. Thought artificial would prob be the way to go - as I am aware of photosynthesis - just thought there might be something i hadn't thought of. And the door is shut when not in use - is a room on main hallway to the kitchen - so not best to have it ajar. Like the idea of possibly getting 2 and rotating. If not, might go for mushrooms Smile

Do you have a socket where you could put a grow lamp? That would really expand your options.

Topbird29 · 17/06/2021 13:41

Will also look at Zamioculcas zamiifolia. Thanks.

No socket to put a grow lamp.

That's not such a bad idea actually. Turn your downstairs cloaks into a micro cannabis farm.

I have these in our windowless bathroom

A cactus might work well. No it would not! A cactus growing long and spindly in search for light is not a pretty sight.

GuyFawkesDay · 17/06/2021 22:20

Our indoor loo has a very lush.....plastic IKEA plant.

GuyFawkesDay · 17/06/2021 22:21

Indoor.... downstairs. Its been a very long day!

MereDintofPandiculation · 17/06/2021 22:24

Every process of the plant's metabolism is driven by energy derived from the sun through photosynthesis. There are some plants that will grow in very low light conditions - some algae and mosses. They have very low energy supplies so they grow very small, a few millimetres high at the most.

And with a socket in there, you can electrocute your enemies.
