Can either of these be saved?

The lavender was in a pot last summer then planted out in the autumn. It looked lovely this spring but then a gardener came to clear the weeds/grass and overly enthusiastically chopped into it Sad so it's half gone. This was 2 weeks ago. It looks very odd but will the good half eventually wither anyway?

The clematis - well, just very sorry-looking, as you can see. I think it was planted very late last summer.

Lavender - the good half will carry on growing, then sometime over the winter you will prune it back, and next year it will grow back into a more symmetrical shape. The "gardener's" pruned half will either grow back next year or it won't. But whatever happens, next year you'll have a better looking plant.

Clematis looks fine, it's just struggling to hold up such huge flowers on such a young plant. Next year will be better.

Your clematis is a young plant and will bulk up as it matures. It will need an obelisk or trellis to grow up, as it’s not self supporting. The string tie is not helping, with a structure to grow up it will naturally twine itself round.

@Beebumble2 I can’t remember without going and looking - how do clematis climb? I don’t think they have tendrils, and I don’t think the stalks twine round like runner beans. I think the leaf stems trine round small twigs.

Yes they climb by using their leaves to twine round trellis, other stems or bean poles.
Mature Clematis have a wonderful habit of growing outwards in the air, until they find something to latch on to.

The clematis is fine. I have mine a specialist clematis food this year and it grew like crazy. I would probably dig up the lavender.
