What do I need?

We are getting a new driveway and will be losing the bamboo at the end of the drive to make a wider driveway. I live on a road where people walk by and now as I'm working at home I don't want people to look in at me.
I could put something 3 foot from the window to block the veiw but allow light on, but treallis doesn't seemto be too high. There's no soil so it needs to be self standing.

A rose? I had one in my last home, well two and they grew to 6ft or so and stayed that height. Not the best to block views in the winter but during the spring-autumn they were good.

Hopefully someone more experienced comes along soon

when you say there is no soil, do you mean something that lives in a pot & will grow up a trellis?

Whatever you get, you should put it in the biggest pot you can manage & water it often.

clematis can be good, or jasmine.

Thanks, I guess I'm thinking trellis and a plant. But I'm not sure what to buy or where to start. The planter trellis things I can see are only 1.2 m which is too short. How easy are roses or clematis?

Do you want something evergreen?

Clematis wouldn't give you cover all year, though some could be grown up on top of something else. Or add annuals such as sweet peas, morning glory or black eyed Susans.
Use as large a pot as possible - a lot of climbers like to have quite deep roots, I believe.

You should be able to get 2m tall trellis - I've got a fan trellis on the back of my arbour which is about that tall.

@errolthedragon

Great name by the way :-)
Your 2 metre trellis, how does it stand up? Do you have it next to a planter? Sorry I know these are stupid questions but I really don't know what I need. This is going on concrete so needs to be self containing. Would a couple of bushes in pots look odd?

Mine has its base in the pot - possibly a mistake as it's rotted a bit - and is simply tied onto the arbour.

You'd probably need to make it more robustly freestanding. I'd be inclined to put some thought into how to do that - make some sort of base for it. I can visualise ways that might be done with modest woodworking skills but not well enough to explain!Grin

Some sorts of shrubs or small trees in large pots can look good. Walking around villages or suburbs looking at other peoples gardens can be a good way to get ideas.

PuffinPeter · 11/06/2021 15:01

Shrubs or small trees can work in large pots, or even bamboo.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/06/2021 18:00

There's a thought, maybe you could pot up the bamboo you're taking out.
A long trough of it with separate pots of something prettier in front in summer might work.

Theblackdogagain · 11/06/2021 19:33

Thanks for the ideas
